RE: need replacement hatch (plastic) for lance 815

I need to replace the excape hatch this year. That may be another issue, but I will start out localy.
We replaced our egress hatch a couple of years back. If I remember correctly it was under $100. A local RV/trailer supply place did it for us.

RE: Free WiFi at McDonalds starting Jan 2010

I can't imagine why I would want to take my laptop into McDonalds. IMO, the whole idea of "fast food" is go in, get the food, eat, and get going.
Well I'm not going to drive over to Mc Donalds from home to use their service but certainly would be pleased to find free WI-FI when ON THE ROAD.

RE: fall color "backyard" camp - Laguna Mtn Rec. Area

Tiger & W6pea
There is another little campground in San Diego County that you might like to check out. Cibbets Flat it is easy to get to, only 4+ miles off of I-8. If you are able to go out mid week you most likely will have the place to yourself!
Campground: Descanso Ranger District, Cibbets Flat Campground
Description: 4200-foot elevation. 25 campsites. Hiking on the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. Location: East of San Diego on I-8, exit at Kitchen Canyon / Cameron Station Road & go north about 4.5 miles.

RE: Issues about a 6 month TC trip?

Here is the biggest problem with taking the back seat out ...... Where do you store it?????? I'm telling you..a back seat is heavy and bulky. I have been known to gripe about storing the thing but I must admit that on the whole it was a really good idea.
PS Of course storing the tail-gate is a problem all of it's own!
One more thought. Last year we met some campers who were using one of those portable little washing machines. They were really pleased with the results. They actually had two of them . One to wash and one for the rinse cycle. My opinion ????? Not a sensible thing to pack into a TC.

RE: What The Best Overall Knife To Use.

I'll second the vote for Victorinox by Forschner. I have these knives at home and a second set in the camper.
8" chiefs knife #40520
7" santoku # 41529
8" cimetar breaking butcher knife #40537
(I LOVE this knife and have been using the same knife for just about 30 years.)
If you can find the little birds beak paring knife pick up 4 or 5 .... they are wonderful!
I have bought (on line) from the same man for several years and if you are interested in his contact information just send me a PM.
I also have cutco knives (a drawer full) but find I only use the bread knife out of that set.

RE: Issues about a 6 month TC trip?

I don't have much to add. The longest we have been out was 7+ weeks. The laundry is a necessary evil. One thing that we do is we both wear dark shorts/pants and white or dark shirts. This makes laundry sorting easy......A dark load and a white load. I have also been known to take some clothing items that were just about ready for the rag bag ....and discarded them instead of laundering them.
Another thing we did was take the back seat out of the truck. John then built a platform that allows us to have "double decker" storage. I have found that there are lots of nooks and crannies in the camper to stash valuables.
I'll be watching to learn what sort of hints others will suggest. Have a great trip. I wish we were going out too!

RE: San Diego Information needed

Paradise By The Sea RV Resort in Oceanside is nice and very close to the beach, about 2 blocks away. They keep it very clean. Spaces are kinda small but with a truck camper you'll be fine.
www.ParadiseByTheSeaRVResort.com
We never go to RV parks... but I'd almost make an exception for this one... I like their rules.
Okay .....That is funny!
I've never seen such a crazy set of rules! Just reading them made me feel like I was in trouble!

You don’t have to add ice… just drive around the block and brush the sides of the tank…
Oh, that is seriously funny!

RE: How to plan my first trip

Well this may be the worst way to plan a trip but hey it works for us. We figure out our end destination, get everything loaded up and pick out a route we want to take and then start driving. When we have an idea of about when we think we are going to want to stop we start looking in our Woodalls campground directory, find camp site and drive to it. Get up and do it again unless we make it to our destination.
We do it this way too.....We have found marvelous campgrounds all across the country.
We live in San Diego and try to avoid driving through Los Angeles. We find that the Cajon pass is much less stressful than going through LA and then over the grapevine.

RE: Finding a leak

Okay, I am not handy enough to build myself a "SealTech" type tester. However I recognize the value of this type of test. Does anyone know where I could have it done in southern Calif?

Finding a leak

I need some advice on how to track down a leak. I realize this can be tricky.
Last month we were in Oregon and to no-ones surprise it rained. We had a small leak show itself around the fantastic fan. How do I go about tracking down the problem?
I climbed on to the roof and looked at all the caulking, vent covers, roof seams etc. The air conditioner is fastened down tightly. Everything looked okay to me but how to know? How do I go about tracking down(and then fixing) the problem?
Our camper is 5 years old and has a metal roof. When we had the solar panel installed (maybe 2 years ago) I had the dealership inspect the roof area and caulk where needed. As far as I can see the camper shows no evidence of any kind of leak...... but keep in mind it never rains in southern California. With winter just around the corner I want to track down and fix this potential problem. Where and how do I start?

First time plumber!

May I take a moment to toot my own horn?
Today I pulled the toilet, replaced both gaskets and reinstalled everything..... With no leaks! Not bad for a 1st timer!

RE: How many have Solar? Is it really needed?

We have both but haven't run the generator more than 3 hours since installing the solar. (I think it is 85w)
We nearly always boondock and find that the solar meets all our needs. On a few occasions we have watched a dvd and were actually able to hear what was being said in the movie! When the generator is on it is all that I can hear.I haven't tried running a crock pot but will give that a try next time we are out.
Was it worth it $$$ wise? Probably not but it sure is nice to have!

RE: Kern River INFO!

We have stayed at Rivernook numerous times. It is great as long as you can get a site on the river (good luck in the high season) This is a busy campground in the summer but off season you can almost have it to yourself. My DH really likes this campground but I think it is entirely too expensive. For that price (almost $40!) those bathrooms should sparkle .... they don't! I guess it is like they say... location, location location.
Sigh
Note: It can be BLAZING hot there.

RE: Family Vacation - Make spare keys for camper

I keep an extra truck key in the camper and extra camper keys in the truck as backups on the road trips.
We learned this lesson the hard way. We locked the truck keys inside while sitting at the only diesel pump at a service station in Van Horn Texas. Never gonna let that happen again!

RE: Our Bigfoot 3000 C1002 so far

Sue,
Congratulations on the new camper and please do post photos. Where are you going first?
Just for the record. If anyone else is trying to make a decision about which camper to go with I want to say that we have an Adventurer (2004 90RDS) and couldn't be more pleased with it. I would be happy to answer any questions. Today I spent the afternoon preparing the camper for a little trip to AZ and New Mexico. I can't wait to get on the road. Personally I would recommend the Adventurer without reservation.

RE: Pots & Pans -Seperate for RV or same as home?

Now if you get invited to dinner with us you will eat off Royal Albert china using sterling silver flatware. Why not??
Me too! In the camper we use my favorite silver (okay, not sterling..It's plate from 1930's... Really cool deco stuff! I love it!) I don't use my silver very often while at home because of the dishwasher. Since I have to handwash in the camper it is a good fit!
