RE: 1976 Dodge Cab Over Rebuild

http://i481.photobucket.com/albums/rr175/aromriell/undersideoverheadvinyl.jpg
Kellil,
You mentioned your ugly shag carpet around the overhead... mine had that too, orange/brown really nasty carpet. This is how my wife and I finished it after I got the overhead fixed, we also did alot of other cosmetic work, not that we had too but once we got started it took on a life of its own.. lol
good luck

RE: 1976 Dodge Cab Over Rebuild

I posted on oldtruckers thread before I saw your rebuild thread. I have a 74 Brougham that also needed overhead repair, although not as bad as yours. Like trucker said, I took out my windows and resealed them with putty tape.(that was where my leaks were coming from. It also looks like you have the aluminum drip railing on yours. I also took this off and resealed it with putty tape. I noticed that most of the putty was gone from the drip rail and I was getting some leaking from the water following the screw holes into the overhead. Like others have said, these old rigs aren't that hard to work on. They are pretty basic. Like trucker I used screws and metal reinforcing plates(available at any hardware store) when I put things back together. It will be stronger when you get done with it than when it was new. I know it looks bad now but your family will be enjoying it in no time.

RE: Total Rebuild of a 1979 Dodge Class C

Kellil,
I bought a 74 Brougham couple of years ago... my overhead looked somewhat like yours only yours has more extensive damage... I was able to do a partial rebuild. My worst damage was from a side window that was leaking.
Good luck... always nice to see another Brougham owner.

RE: Total Rebuild of a 1979 Dodge Class C

For all of those old enough to remember the 413 engine is mentioned in the Beach Boys song "Shutdown"...
It happened on a strip where the road is wide
Two cool sharks sitting side by side
My fuel injected Stingray and a 413
Revvin' up their engines and it sounds real mean
Tach it up Tach it up buddy gonna shut you down.
Trucker,, you are doing real well on the cost, I am impressed.

RE: Paint vs. Wrap

Jason,
I like all the looks, including the original... its a nice looking ride anyway you go... 10 grand is alot, but probaly less than the depreciation the minute you drive a newer one with full body paint off the lot! If it was me I would probaly keep the color you have, buy a boat and head to the lake for the weekend... but hey, isn't it great that we all get to make our own choice....
good luck and keep having fun.

RE: 73 dodge midas

Eaglesfly,
Looks like you have a good start.... check out the "total rebuild of a 79 dodge" I think it is... you may not have to go that far. I bought my 74 Brougham with a dodge 360 a couple years ago.... motor and tranny run well, I have not had to do much to the them. The 360 is a good motor. I had to redo alot of the interior in mine as well but they are quite easy to work on really. The older ones are pretty basic. Feel free to ask questions, and check out some of the other rebuild sites. There is also an "Old dodge motorhomes" thread on this site with many pages of info. If I ever have a question I just ask it and usually get several good responses. Have Fun!!!

RE: What did you do to your Class C MH today???

Got in an fired it up, then ran it about 4 miles out on the back road to warm things all up and then came back into town on the highway to get it up to speed. Everything appeared to be fine.... just waiting for a little better weather to take it out for a weekend.

RE: How many of us are there? Owners of Dodge based RV's?

Thats true, they are pretty funky units.... nothing quite like the old dodge mohomes.... I know that Ford 460 is a gas hog but of all the vehicles I have owned over the last 40 plus years, the mopar vehicles and Ford trucks have been the best. They have always run the longest with the least amount of trouble. I plan on getting a bigger class A one day for more extensive trips but I plan on keeping the old dodge around for short campouts and take the grandkids fishin' etc. Congrats again it looks great.

RE: How many of us are there? Owners of Dodge based RV's?

Thanks Griff,
That was exactly what I was needing to know. I don't have a problem now but was trying to be more prepared in the future. I will try to locate my resistor and then go find a spare to have on hand in case of a problem on the road. From my reading you all seem to think a spare is a good idea, so I just assumed it is a problem from time to time.
thanks again,
A.

RE: How many of us are there? Owners of Dodge based RV's?

OK, throw back to an old subject.. ballast resistors. I have read how we should always have an extra one for these old dodges, my question is: where is it located, how do I know it has failed, and when I go to my local NAPA store and ask the 25 yr old behind the counter for one... how can I be sure he will give me the right one for my 1974 with a 360. I think this has been discussed in the past but my search didn't bring up all the answers I was looking for. I replaced my plugs, wires, cap and rotor and it runs smooth and starts easy. Just wondering what I might have missed.
thanks,
A.

RE: Finding tires for My RV (size 8.00R 16.5)

Along the lines of what j-d just said, my local tire shop guy said the 8.75 x 16.5 are readily available and would work on my old 74. He quoted me around $150 a tire. I did see an ad about 2 years ago from a regional tire store chain that had the 8.00 x 16.5's listed for around $140 each but they usually then charge mounting on top of that. I haven't called them to see if they still carry the 8.00 size. Like others have said you are basically buying a tire for a middle weight to heavy weight truck and they don't come cheap.

RE: Total Rebuild of a 1979 Dodge Class C

Trucker,
I know you want to use a rubber roof, but have you considered a metal roof. If they made a roll of metal that was 4 inches or so over width you could build your framing up and then bring the metal over the side far enough to overlap the existing side metal. You might then have to put some drip railing around it but they still make the old style aluminium railing (I had to replace some of mine) that is fairly cheap and works well.
Don't you just love it when some yahoo from across the country makes crazy suggestions without having any idea what would actually work?
I am sure you will find the right answer as you are doing a great job.

RE: How many of us are there? Owners of Dodge based RV's?

mbryanr,
I needed new side mirrors so I just went to the local salvage yard. I found some west coast style mirrors that were the perfect size for my 74 dodge brougham on a 70's era ford pickup. They actually had 3 or 4 pickups with the mirrors I wanted so I just picked the best looking set. I believe it cost me 10 or 12 bucks for the pair.
good luck,
A.
