I have a Jayflight 27bhwithout slide and love it. Plenty of room for us. My sister had a 24ft Nomad with bunks and front queen and it was pretty spacious.

With your Tahoe, I'd stick with the ultralight category. Lots of choices under 28ft. As mentioned look for "BH". Gross weight under 7000 lbs.

A couple come to mind which do not cost an arm and a leg to buy. One is the later model 24tb Coachmen Spirit of America se. Around 4000 lbs dry, 27', front walk around bed, 2 bunks rear, center kitchen, but no couch. Another larger one is the Jayco 26 BH. with front walk around queen, Double and single bunks rear, couch. 29', Around 4800 lbs dry brochure weight. Keep in mind loaded weights will be considerably higher. Our first TT was a 2003 Coachmen 24tb which had the bed in the front sideways, so the inside person (which was me) had to crawl or hop over the other one to get out of the bed. No good for those dreaded midnight bathroom runs. Also no couch, which is a compromise of having a smaller TT. We also had to break down the dinette every night to make a bed. When considering our present TT we knew that a walk around queen bed, a couch, and bunks for the 3 boys were the three biggies. If you are stuck in your trailer for any amount of time and all you have is the dinette to sit at for a family of 4 or 5 it can get cramped pretty quick, hence the couch. Our TT has a small slide that adds to the room. The models mentioned do not have slides which keeps the weights down. These are just a couple and other manufact`s make the same floorplans. I suppose they make shorter ones, but the smaller they are the more compromises there will be. Slideouts could make up for what is lost in length but of course they add weight to the unit. Good luck with whatever you purchase:

The Coachmen 24TBQ that we have is 25" (27" overall), front queen walkaround bedroom (the door closes!) and rear bunks. Not to mention ducted heat/AC and I bought it to pull with my 4.8 liter 1/2 ton Chevy. I since bought a new truck but the 1/2 ton pulled it with no problem. I jusrt needed a back seat and decided to go all the way with the Diesel.
Good luck and happy camping!

You're always going to get biased opinions to this kind of question. What's best for you is not always best for others. Try going to some RV shows to see a lot of different floor models at once. You can also judge the quality of the builds and rule out certain manufacturers. As far as the shortest question, Mine is classed as a 24' that runs around 28' nose to tail, 3 bunks in the rear, Queen size U-shape dinette on a slide and a walk-around queen bed in the front. Spree 240bhs, they also have lots of other "BH" floorplans. Good Luck

Thanks again for the replies - I knew that there would be different types of opinions offered up which is what I was after. Seems like lots of camping experience on this forum, and I was hoping to shortcut some of my homework. I do plan on attending some RV shows and checking out the dealers as well as continuing to watch the classifieds I appreciate all the answers...

Update - local fella here where I live has a 2006 Keystone Outback Bunkhouse with a slide for sale - asking $9,500 which also includes the levelizing hitch. I don't know all of the specs about the trailer - I seen it sitting on a parking lot w/ a for sale sign - Got the phone # and called the fella. All he told me on the phone is that it is a 28ft. model but I don't see that model on the NADA website - the only BHS on there is a M-29. Maybe that is a 28footer??? Gonna meet him this pm to look at it and get the specs.
From the outside, it looks in decent shape, but who knows.
Any advice on some things to look for to make sure it is in decent shape?
Thanks!!!
