I think I see the confusion...it's not en enclosed area...the venting and airflow supplied to the generator will exceed the requirements of the generator.

If you are not familiar with this model, I can elaborate. I have completely disassembled it. It has a single air inlet opposite of a single warm air outlet (same side as the exhaust). The exhaust will exit the factory generator compartment, and be routed out from under the vehicle. The complete unit is plastic lined with foam. The design is such that it runs very cool, and any hot spots are covered (with plastic) and air is forced over it. The 'box' will allow cool in and hot out, with the possibility of a supplemental fan as needed.

This is also a lance designed generator compartment, not just a storage spot, with a metal interior and factory venting built into the door.

Gasoline powered generators have been used in RV’s since the beginning of time and I wouldn’t think twice about using one pending it had a proper intake air/exhaust setup. Motorhomes and toy haulers come standard with gasoline powered units, a TC is no more vulnerable than any other RV in this regard.

Ever heard of anybody having a problem using a gasoline powered generator in an RV? With the odds of you being injured/maimed/killed being in the stratosphere doing just about anything else on the planet compared with this, I don’t see the big deal. Like for instance, there are over 70,000 pedestrian injuries and 5000 deaths annually in the US and not one from a gasoline powered generator used in an RV that I have ever heard of. Should we all stop walking now as well?

You mean with a portable gasoline powered generator jury rigged into an RV using an unproven design or one designed from the ground up to be installed in an RV? Got news for you, dead people don't post much..........except in Chicago.

One more thing to consider, the odds of being killed and eaten by a shark are only slightly less for people who never venture into the ocean than for people who do. Don't know what that has to do with this, but it is an interesting fact none the less. Kinda like comparing generators designed for RV vs ones designed to run on a picnic table.

Excellent work Two-rock. I think your install looks great!

That CO detector with the auto shut-off is super-cool, thanx for sharing! I just tried to order one from West Marine but they are out of stock right now I'll definitely pick one up as soon as they come in.

By the way,I am one of those people that a certain moderator believes should be dead because I have a portable Honda generator mounted in my TC... and well, now hundreds of Hobbs meter hours later, I am still here to rave about how much better my Honda is than the Onan it replaced. Also, I added a tri fuel kit to my Honda from Central Maine Diesel, you might check to see if they have one for your Yamaha.

I do concur with others that you should never run your generator inside that compartment unless you have a proper exhaust system (and cooling if necessary) in place! But, as long as your exhaust exits out of the camper (mine runs up and over the roof) you will be at least as safe as any factory-installed generator.

Looking good and good on you for being able to do a quality install yourself.There will always be nay sayers chirping and preaching about the manufactures recomondations and wether or not it has been tested by polotitians. I have done a similar install on my C class ... see pics here My gen retrofit. I have close to 100 hours on this set up and the CO inside has never gone off ....never. With the previous Onan which is approved and designed for the location the CO detector would always go off after about two hours of use. So much for the therory that if it has been approved that it is safe . What a pile of brain wash nonsense. Keep up the good work. I t is nice to see there are still afew people out there that can think for themselves and do not need a product information guide to decide wether it is safe or not.

Nice setup.

Many people talk about "proven designs" from some RV company. They talk as if these companies spend millions yearly in R&D. Personally, I don't trust anything my TC manufacturer put together any farther than I can throw my TC. We're talking about an RV company for crying out loud, not an aerospace company.

My propane tanks are supposed to be in a sealed compartment in case I ever have a propane leak. You know what, when I switched to tank number two my alarm went nuts in a matter of minutes. I installed that CO/Propane detector when I first bought the TC because it didn't have one in there. I could have easily blown myself up into bits (and anyone around me) had I trusted their craftsmanship and design. Sure the valve leaked because of its age, and you can't fault the manufacturer for that. But the compartment should be sealed and vent somewhere away from any ignition source or living space and THAT failed to happen.

If you have the resources and access to information, and you spend enough time on the research, your probably going to do a better job of it yourself. Whatever happened to American Ingenuity?!?!

You certainly could convert your genny to run off your propane tanks which would save you from having to carry three different types of fuel.

You might have heard of a couple of small companies that do spend many millions of dollars on RDT&E anually. They employee the world's top scientists and engineers. They spend many thousands of hours testing new designs before they offer them to the public. The two companies are Honda and Yamaha. They both build similar portable gasoline powered generators and they both specifically say to not use them in the way the msiminoff and two-rock propose because it is VERY DANGEROUS and can kill you. I think I will go with the opinion of two of the worlds largest engine manufacturers on this one.
