We are considering going to Washington DC this coming summer. We already know we will stay at Cherry Hill.
Weather wise, when is a good time to go?
Anyother tips will be appreciated.

As early as possible.
Get familiar with the Metro system. Do a Google search for WMATA Metro.
Air and Space Museum downtown as well as the Udvar Air and Space out toward Dulles airport.
Don't go east of the Anacostia River, particularly at night. The downtown area is pretty safe.
I'm still trying to get to the Spy Museum. I've heard good things.
Get White House tickets through your Congressman, and do it well in advance.

You can go to www.weather.com, type in any city, go to month forecast then scroll down to get the averages for that city for any month of the year.
Cherry blossom time has got to be awesome in D.C.

I can not tell you time of year really. It depends on what you want to do. If your considering early season before or after the week of the Cherry Blossom festaval is good (dont come that week its a madhouse.)
Get familiar with metro, www.metroopensdoors.com so you can find your way around town, but it is not that bad to walk either here and there.
If your comming in summer if you are not used to heat/humidity I would say june to early July over late july through august.

I would suggest working backwards from the worst time to go, which is in the summer when its packed with school tours and vacationers. Long lines and its hot and humid.
Also watch for special events, like protests, tea baggers, etc. It snarls traffic and some areas are closed.
May is nice. The Cherry Blossoms are great in April but the Festival might not be the best time to go .

I lived and worked in the DC area for 15 years. I recomend April/May time frame. Thats before School are out and most people don't take vacations until Schools are out. Cherry Blossom time is very nice. And use Metro rail it the cheapest and safest. As in most major Cities after dark isn't a good time to go down town. And most everything is closed after dark also. Let us know what your thoughts are about your stay at Cherry Hill. Good Luck.. GBY.....

If you are not limited to go in the summer, we have been there in late Oct and early Nov and the weather was fantastic. Also we have been in the summer and it was 100 degrees on the mall.
By the way, the spy museum was great.
Good luck and happy camping

Took the family in mid June 2008, right after school was out. Yes, it was still VERY warm, but not as bad as it gets in July/August. Crowds were manageable. If we weren't constrained by taking our school age kids, we would have done April/May or Sept/Oct.
Go to both Air & Space museums. Heck, see all the Smithsonian museums.
Thought the Spy museum was quite good, if you're into spy stuff, be it real or just Bond. If you can't do the museum, at least enjoy the gift shop.
Holocaust museum is very good, if you have any interest in the topic. Combine it with your visit to the Mint, as it's next door.
We did the whole DC visit (except Udvar Air and Space out by Dulles) via the Metro. The whole national mall and museums are well served by Metro stations. We didn't rent a car until the final day, so we could visit Udvar A&S. Picked a hotel built on top of a Metro station, quite useful on the rainy days (or hot/humid days)
Didn't get a chance to tour the White House because my congressman didn't get back to my request, even though it was sent in 3 months in advance. If you know your dates, contact your rep. Also, reserve tickets for the Washington Monument before you leave, as early as you know when you want to visit.
Mount Vernon has an excellent exhibit on Washington (the man) now. The house and grounds are worth a visit, but what really impressed me was the exhibit. Get there early, as the lines get very long.
Is your visit just DC or the surrounding region as well?
