We are interested in taking this route from coast to coast. Evidently, it is the oldest continuous route. We have a 40ft Endeavor with a tow. Seems like a great adventure.

Has anyone done it? Any tips? Are the roads wide enough and are there too many traffic lights. We have looked at the Atlas and find it parallels highway 90. That could be our alternate if too slow.

Looking forward to anyone with experience on this route.

We lived near Highway 20 in eastern Iowa for over 20 years. I can tell you in Iowa, it is almost entirely 4 lane divided interstate style construction. In western Illinois, however there are still about 40 miles of two lane hilly and winding road (From the Mississippi east).

I should add that for the most part the original two lane road is still in use next to the four lane. Of course on the old road you will encounter towns every 5-10 miles with slower speeds and traffic controls. If you do not mind the slow downs, going the two lane route affords more opportunities to "stop and smell the roses".

At least in Iowa, I would not hesitate using the two lane of 20 with my 38' Damon and toad. You should also make it through western Illinois OK, also.

Whatever route you choose:

Good luck and happy camping...

Nebraska US 20

Some of the neatest part of the trip above. Have fun. We've done many miles on 20, never a problem.

I hope you're planning this trip in the spring or summer. You are likely to encounter some rather unpleasant weather in the winter......Dennis

Are you talking US20 or IH20 thru Texas, Louisiana, Missippi, Alabama, Georgia?

We traveled IH 20 from Marshal, TX to Savanah, GA. The rest areas in Louisiana and Mississippi were closed when we went in May. There weren't that many in Alabama if I'm not mistaken. Was very glad we had an RV.

Some of the roads need improvements. You definitely feel the separations between each concrete pad. We drive a 35' Winnebago Brave, gas.

Good luck. Don't forget to stop at the different state rest areas to get info on road conditions, etc. The ones in Texas have free wifi.

Using the term "route" or "highway" does little to identify a road since there can be several roads with the same number designation (in this case, I-20 vs US-20...there's also an I-90 and a US-90). So the question is, which road are you talking about?

The OP said "Evidently, it is the oldest continuous route." Therefore I believe we are talking about US 20 and not I-20. It is a beautiful route through NY and NW PA, which my family traveled before the building of the NYS Thruway. It goes coast to coast on a northern route.

Thank you for your response. We would be traveling in the spring or summer months. Thank you Wheel Estate for the clearance web site. We have ordered the 2010 Trailer Life directory that has added that information, but your input website will be added to our favorites. and it is US20, Newport,Or.to Cambridge,Mass. I think this is a great idea, and wish you well.

I wanted to give you a heads up that the section of US Route 20 from Sturbridge, MA to Worcester, MA can be difficult during morning and evening commute times. They have done some improvements, but people were driving too fast and there were a few accidents that were horrific.

Middle of the day is fine with interesting views.
