US-301 is an excellent route - right from I-95 a few miles after Memorial Bridge in Delaware to the Richmond by-pass (I-295). A few towns but otherwise a divided highway with nice countryside and a 55mph.

You might also consider taking US-13 over the bridge tunnel and connecting to US-17 in NC. This is a nice route favored by RVers who want to avoid I-95 down a bit past Charleston, SC. Again a few towns but not too bad.

There is another bypass that being the Garden State Parkway to Cape May Ferry to Lowes Maryland,Route 13 to Chesepeeke Bay bridge and tunnel, then back to I-95.

We take 301 whenever heading South. Turns into Rt 207 about 12 miles from 95 just above Richmond. There is a Welcome Center just before the Potomic River with plenty of parking. Lots of truck stops and places to eat once you reach 95. We normally stop at Flying J about 1/4 mile past 95 on 207.

Depending on time of travel, it can be slow to very slow. Later evening little traffic.

Many years ago Rt 301 was a great way around Washington. Then suburban sprawl arrived and the area got more congested. From Bowie to Waldorf it is a series of traffic lights and shopping centers. It is especially congested at Bowie where 301 turns south off of Rt. 50. That said, I consider it a breeze compared to the stress of high-speed driving in the traffic on I-95. But it is not going to save you time, if time matters.

I tried the 301 bypass from Towson to Richmond last fall, definitely not the way to go if you are in a hurry as there are many small towns and traffic lights throughout the entire route, there is however the convenience of restaurants, malls and just about everything you need right beside the road.

I know many people will go to Fla via North Dakota to avoid Rte 95, but I've found picking the day, date, and time of travel makes all the difference in the world. I've seen too many posts talking about the shopping malls, the traffic lights, the small towns, and the many cross roads to consider Rte 301. However, I do accept that a lot of people really loathe 95 and don't mind the aforementioned conditions on 301. This year we're picking New Year's Day (a Friday of a three-day weekend) to get to Fredericksburg. I'm betting the traffic will be light .... we'll see. Camp on!
