We come home from our fall vacation in October and in November I am sending for information about the states we are considering going to the next September.
We have already decided where we will go in the spring for a month.

If we are going to do some beach camping at state parks we make the reservations the minute they become available. If we don't we don't get the good sites.

A few years ago we took a trip down to the Florida Keys. We made reservations 11 months in advance, because we wanted to make sure we had a place. We are already planning our 2010 trips. We will probably take a one week trip to Buffalo National River, and a two week trip to visit relatives in Ohio. We will not worry about reservations until later.
Have fun.

We always plan a camping trip for the Fall and for Spring. Typically, if I know it is a popular place, I'll go ahead and book 6 month ahead. Otherwise, I may wait until closer to the date. However, we have never pulled out of our driveway for a camping trip without making a reservation ahead of time. We are 20 minutes from our local state park, FDR, in Pine Mountain, GA. I even make reservations ahead of time there.

Some trips I plan, and some we just wing it. I ALWAYS make reservations for a summer week in Topsail Hill Preserve SP as early as possible. I also make ressies for any summer weekend in Florida, Thanksgiving or Christmas in Florida, and Mem. Day, July 4,Labor day and any October weekend anywhere in North Georgia. Otherwise, we'd never get in.
However, when we went cross-country 2 years ago the only 2 reservations we made were a week in Yellowstone and 4 days in Anaheim, CA, so we could be near to Disneyland. Everything else was seat of the pants.

We love love LOVE FDR! In fact, we're going there the weekend before Thanksgiving. I've never been there that it wasn't packed. We ALWAYS make ressies there because we don't want to be disappointed.

I think it depends more on if you work or not, and what type of work you do.
Since both of us still work, we plain our major trips a year in advance. With smaller weekend trips we pick a place the week of or at most a few weeks in advance.

I would just as soon pack it up and go. My wife on the other hand likes everything planned so I let her. I do plan out if we are going somewhere that may need it or and excursion that I know will be popular.

I'm a planner. 2010 is in the books and 2011 is under advisement. If you don't book 11 months in advance in our state parks here you are the one left out because your rig won't fit what is left or it is completely booked. I like to look forward to my trips and not be disappointed when I arrive to find out nothing is left or big enough for us.
That being said-we are going out west next year and we will be winging some of it, just not the most popular places.
FWIW-if you want Fort Wilderness at Halloween next year you are too late. The park is booked and they are not releasing any more reservations until next year.
