If wheels actually say 1820#, look close at the 7 versus 2, they are LOAD RANGE C. IMO manufacturers stamp either weight or psi for a wheel made for a certain size tire, and expect you to know what it measns. I wish they were more explicit, but I doubt it will happen. At least now you know the wheel ratings (if it is 1820# marked).

Very few manufacturers put on rims that are more capable (read expensive) than needed for the tires they install.

JJBIRISH,

How is HpyKmpr1962 citing Goodyear out of content, if they published the info on the tires?
I mean its a PDF on there home page for the Marathon.

"Do not exceed the maximum pressure for the wheel.
o If the maximum pressure for the wheel prohibits the increase of air pressure, then the
maximum speed must be restricted to 65 mph.
o The cold inflation pressure must not exceed 10 psi beyond the inflation specified for the
maximum load of the tire."

Now to me if your wheel can't take the extra PSI you can't go faster the 65MPH on the Goodyear, but if your wheel can take 10 extra PSI, then you good for 66-75MPH.
This is a big liability for Goodyear to put this out if it were not true.

The question asked was if the OP could use D tires on his rims that come with C tires…

The answer is quite simply yes…

He can run the D tire up to the PSI rating of the rim or that of the tire, which ever is lower…

I think I said or meant to say out of context not out of content…

He basically answered the OP’s question by not answering it at all, and by saying what he does…

Quote:

To answer your question.....

2 years ago I needed to change out tires and upgraded from "C" to "D" rated (same size).
Have had zero problems with rim failure.
As stated or goodyears web site (attachment ) I run interstate speeds , and yes sometimes exceed the rated speed for the tires (65 mph). I currently run 70 psi when running interstate speeds. No problems with rim failure.

he failed to say he already knew his rims are safely rated for a LR E tire… in effect misleading the OP, IMO…

I believe his intent was more to boast about exceeding the rated speed of the tire and cites Good Year as justification for that…

I have read that page many times and have spoke to Good Year engineers before… that page does not constitute a recommendation from good year to use their tires at anything but the speed rating branded on the tire… nor is it a endorsement for the tires fitness to use the product above it rated speed…

since there is a awareness that some speed limits are higher than 65 MPH and many users will ignore the tires branded speed rating that the higher pressure would be needed if used at speeds of 66/75 MPH…

While this is a good year PDF file it is not a good year standard it is a statement based on industry standards from the RMA…

please feel free to contact good year yourself about the issue, don’t take my word for it…

If you believe it is prudent to run 10 PSI above the maximum pressure and drive 10 MPH above the maximum speed rating on your tires that’s fine, but I will say again it is irresponsible to advocate it to others…

So far the only thing I can find on the wheels/rims is "1870 lbs" and then followed by the letter "E" - no psi rating/sticker/etc.

I'm so darn confused - some people saying "Get the D-rated tires and run them on your current rims", others saying "Your C-rated tires and rims should be just fine" and others saying "ZOMG! Danger, danger Will Robinson - you will have a massive failure and your rig was unsafe from the factory."

As long as it is OK to mount the D-rated Maxxis tires on these rims, inflate to 50psi, and be safe, I'll go that route. Otherwise my options are just getting C-rated Maxxis tires and keep them at 50psi.

I guess I just find it hard to believe that the TT manufcaturer would put dangerous tires and rims on a vehicle that they could be held liable for in the event of damage.

Where did you look??? Did you remove the tire and check in the valley as has been suggested in both threads???

Or call the mfg…

I removed the tire and checked - also looked on my replacement rim I bought.

So, in closing, if it is OK to run my D-rated tires on my 1820lbs rims and simply bring them up to 50psi, sounds to me like it might be the way to go - I get 2 more plys and a stronger tire than the C-rated 6-ply ones, and if I ever do get higher-rated rims, I can swap the tires onto them, correct?

Anything I'm missing here? The cost difference between the D and C rated Maxxis tires are about $60 total for all the tires. Do I run into any problems or safety concerns running the D-rated tires only at 50psi on my tires?

you will not have a problem using the LR D tire at 50 PSI...

page ten here has good years load/inflation tables, and a lot of other good information for you...

OK

Now that the original question has been answered, have you been able to find a source for the Maxxis ST205/75R15 load range D tire???

Nope - can't find the D-rated anywhere but straight from Maxxis, at $200 more than Gripston and Tire-Easy - ouch!

call Maxxis directly and ask for a name and number for a distributor and/or dealer near your area…

Maxxix has the worst distribution system in the business… I had the number but I can’t find it right now…

They told me their distribution system would be dramatically improved… that was two years ago and its no better… its even worse for some of their other tires in the commercial line…

Even the Maxxis on line store shows "out of stock" when you try to order them. What gives??
