Our dog needs to go to the groomer. Have appointment next week. My question is if his anal glands needs to be cleared out do you receive a odor from them? Our groomer does the anal glands as part of the groomeing Thanks for all the help I know that I will receive a wealth of knowledge to help us out.

My daughter grooms dogs. The way I understand it, some dogs and cats get uncomfortable there and will drag their butts on the floor for relief. Clearing the glands for them keeps them from doing this because then they don't get that uncomfortable sensation, I guess.

yes, it smells (stinks!!!). most express their anal gland when pooping or marking territory. if they don't do this, that's when you have problems, either the gland gets swollen/irratated/infected or they've sitting in your lap and all at once "what the heck is that smell?". my wife was a vet tech so she takes care of our pups if they have problems, it's not hard to do but i would let your vet show you how before you tried, better yet let the groomer do it if they will. if the dog does too much of the "booty-scootin-boogie" before going to the groomer, you might want to call the vet so as not to let it get infected.

Yes it stinks. And older dogs do not really squat right, so sent glands get full. Our vet says to get it done about every two months. Note there is some danger to dog if done wrong, so some groomers will not do it, especially on older dogs. Vets will do it.

We can always tell when our Boston Terrier has to do her poop business, she expresses her anal glands first (I know she's a little backwards). But boy oh boy does it STINK.

The glands naturally express during bowel functions, but some dogs create a build-up and require "help".
I haven't yet encountered a groomer who expresses the glands fully. Most groomers express externally by pinching and pulling the glands - not a fully process if the dog isn't emptying naturally. A vet does an internal probing and cleaning. Adding extra fiber to the diet can help, but it isn't enough for some dogs.
Excess licking of the area indicate it's time. Eventually, you'll know your dogs requirements.

That's exactly what a groomer told me. They don't go the full process as what a vet. would do.

We've never had a dog that needed it and our oldest dog made it to 16. We've never had a "scooter." Our country vet is of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. He doesn't believe in routinely doing this procedure if it isn't indicated.

Whether or even if or how often a dog needs anals expressed is as much a function of individual anatomy as diet, infection, life style, etc. Many dogs and most cats never need to have them expressed.
There is nothing magic about a vet doing this vs. a groomer. The reason we get the task frequently is because some dogs (especially those with no tails) are really difficult to do compared to others.
The stuff expressed can vary from tooth paste consistency to really watery, sometimes can be infected (blood tinged or pus) and can sometimes have more solid fleck material in it.
BTW, this is one of my least favorite jobs
