My husband & I are planning a trip to Idaho the first week of May. We see that we can take the 395 to the 6 to the 93. We have also heard that we can go to Las Vegas & take the 93.
Has anyone made this trip & which route. Would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

I would much prefer to go through Las Vegas, staying on I-15 to I-84. It's a bit longer, but an easier and several hours faster drive.

I just came down 93 from Twin Falls to Vegas this past week, its a beautiful, quiet, relaxing two lane highway.A favorite snowbird route.Use the 318 shortcut, its also a good highway.

The route you asked about 396-6-93, is a good one. All of those roads are in great shape. Fill up in Tonopah, not a lot between there and Ely.
15 past Las Vegas and then 93 North is also an option and maybe more direct. Personally I would stay away from 15 all the way up to 84 West to Twin Falls. Too many trucks and traffic, 93 is a great drive through some interesting country.

395/6/93 will be much more scenic and you will avoid having to drive through Las Vegas traffic. US-93 goes right into Twin Falls...the I-15/I-84 route takes you many, many miles out of your way and also means having to travel through Salt Lake City!!!

Given what a pleasant drive 93 is I would advise taking that route. I-15 is busy--lots of traffic, seemingly all the time between Vegas and Salt Lake City.
93 has vast stretches of almost no traffic, is well maintained and is, for me, a relaxing drive. No question how I would go.

My only comment would be to fill up in Bishop at either the Von's or the Piute Palace rather than Tonopah. We took that route to Jerome last May and it was an easy drive, very scenic, and the road was good. Weather in May was perfect for this trip. I think we stayed the night in Ely before heading to Idaho. Look for the base jumpers when you cross the bridge heading into Jerome-Idaho Falls. Quite a sight.

We go through LV and use the 318 shortcut as said above. 12 to 14 hours in a car from OC. We have found this to be the quickest. LV traffic in the morning never seems that bad. Stay in the #1 or #2 lanes. Although coming back through LV on a Sunday of a holiday weekend is a bad mistake, 6/395 would be better in that case of coming home IMO.

Curious why you wouldn't fill up in Tonopah. We filled at Vons in Bishop and again in Tonopah where it was cheaper believe it or not. The Chevron on the North end of town will accomadate any size rig and they have a great travel store inside. I wouldn't have made it to Ash Springs if I hadn't filled up in Tonopah and I believe the same would be true to going to Ely. That in itself is a little food for thought.

We always use I-15 to 93, then 318, then 6 into Ely or viceversa. Excellent 2 lane road all the way. By taking 318 you wiil miss several pulls or decents on that section of 93. At Wells, Nv. at 93 and I-80, you can choose from 2 Flying J's and a Loves. At Jackpot there is two RV parks and four casinos. When in Twin Falls try Rock Creek County park on 93 beside the hospital. Water and electric, $11.00 a night just this past summer!
