Just got this in the mail, anyone else?

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2007
model year GMC Sierra vehicles registered in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario,
Prince Edward island, and Quebec. As a result, GM is conducting a safety recall.
Some of these vehicles may have a condition where an electronic component located beneath the driver's
seat may corrode due to a significant quantity of snow and/or water containing road salt or other
contaminants entering the vehicle and saturating the acoustical padding beneath the carpet. Your
vehicle's electronic sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) is located underneath this acoustical padding.
If sufficient moisture collects and is retained in the padding, it may cause excessive corrosion under the
module; compromising the module seal and allowing water intrusion and system malfunction. This may
result in illumination of the Airbag Readiness light, along with a "Service Airbag" message on the Driver
Information Centre, and in rare cases, deployment, of the seat belt pretensioner and/or airbags.
Your GM dealer will remove the acoustical pad above the SDM. This service will be performed for you at
no charge.

Removing sound deadening pad is going to cure the problem? Won't the equipment still be exposed to the elements? How about the trucks in the US where it snows? Is there a notice also for the owner to avoid getting the carpet wet, such as cleaning said carpet?

Maybe that's all they could afford to do to fix the problem!

Once upon a time I had an 2003 Avalanche. EACH and EVERY Airbag sensor had been REPLACED at least four times and STILL the airbag light came ON. Bought a new 2005 Dodge QC CTD 4X4 auto and have never looked back! Now have a 2008 same truck (Dodge). GM Factory Engineer told me that he doubted if the bags would perform. Enough for me!!! JMHO

Removing the deadening will eliminate the path through which the moisture wicks, then stays in contact with the component.
I doubt direct "splash" is the problem, it's more likely damp deadening staying in contact for weeks or even months at a time.
In which case I suggest removal is perfectly OK.

Those SDMs are extremely hardy. I downloaded one that was under water for about 6 weeks. I dumped and shook the water out of it, hit it with some compressed air, then electrical contact cleaner and more compressed air, and downloaded it.

They are typically mounted on a slight high spot under the front passenger seat in most GM models. Likely removing some of the sound deadener would work if it is causing the moisture to wick up to the SDM.

I got the same notice here in Michigan the other day. I don't get in and out of a vehicle enough times in a day to get things very wet so I doubt I will do anything about the recall.

I received the same notice. Not sure if I will do anything either. The truck only moves twice a week in the winter.

A good set of floor mats (such as weathertech) should do the trick.

Why not just wrap it in some heavy plastic to protect it from the moisture, along with removing the padding around the unit?
