I was able to retrieve the data from the Laptop Hard Drive by removing the drive.
This may have have been doing it the HARD WAY, but it worked out fine.

1- Remove the hard drive from Toshiba Satellite.
2- Insert hard drive in an Apricorn Link USB external hard drive enclosure. Also HERE

I first plugged it into my New HP Win7 machine, but got the big BSOD screen, so I pulled it out right away.

3- I Plugged the Apricorn into my old Ubuntu Linux box and it showed all the files on the disk.

4- I transfered all the files I needed to an external Western Digital Hard Drive that I use for all my backups.

Since the Laptop was completely dead (mother Board I think) this was the only way I could figure to get my data out.

I hope this helps out others with similar problems.

Hmmm... I wonder why you got the BSOD when you plugged it into your new machine?

Congrats that you were able to recover your data.

OK, I hate to sound dumb, but that little doodad gets plugged into your computer and then into what? I am just learning about separate hard drives, etc. Keep it low key please, like the idiot books that put this info is simple plain English. Thanks.

it basically lets you use any internal IDE or SATA drive 2.5" or 3.5" as an external USB drive...

So you don't have to have ann external drive enclosure around.

great for migrating drives, or using bare drives for external storage...

The hard drive from the laptop was a complete XP booting operating system which confused the new computer when I plugged it in.

I was essentially trying to boot and already booted system.
Like trying to start your heart when it was already started.

Seems like having a Linux computer lying around comes in handy.

I mostly use Linux and it is very handy when you are dealing with contaminated windows devices.

I've done it but never needed Linux, just hook up to another XP box and grab the data off. Sadly its happened to many times; overheating laptop fried 2 HDs, another overheated and fried itself, another had the power plug connection to the motherboard break twice.

There is a simple explanation for the BSOD.
When you install the OS, whatever it is, it sets it up to run with all the current hardware. When you pull the drive off and plug it into a different machine and try to boot up, all the drivers and settings are expecting to see the hardware they were intended for.

So when it is loading the drivers and it gets to a completely different item, such as chipset, mass storage devices and so on, it stops dead in its tracks and cannot continue loading because the item it is looking for is not present.

I work on computers regularly and have experienced this many times.

Just yesterday I attempted to get my webserver back up and running. The motherboard was dead so I got another old mboard with the same VIA chipset and hooked it up to that. Then I booted into Safe Mode and deleted all the hardware drivers and then rebooted to install the new ones. The bonus here is that I don't have to completely redo my website server and saved many hours of work.

The solution you describe is by far the easiest. I keep one of those enclosures around for data backup when on the road and also for extra "stuff". I also have a nifty little device at home that is very handy. A hard drive docking station resides on my desk that takes both full size and laptop size drives. It is hot-pluggable so I simply plug the drive in. Then you can read the drive in the same manner as a USB memory stick or the above described enclosure.

Hmm- my OS detects the hardware on each boot, and with the exception of *some* graphics devices, I can pull the hard drive out and put it in another computer and it will boot just fine- though it might dump you to a text mode screen if a graphics driver is missing, but it won't crash. The only caveat is the boot device order and terminology, though that is easily editable.
