Does anyone have any experience with this generator? Mine has about 8 hours on it and when started will only run for a few seconds then smoothly shut off. It will not restart unless it sits for several minutes then the same thing repeats.

The spark plug is clean and dry when I pull it out to check. Spark is present. Though I don't know if it is sparking immediately after a shutdown.

I am suspecting the low oil shutoff switch though the oil level is fine and the low oil light does not come on when it dies and stops which gives me doubts. This switch does not look very accessible to try and bypass for troubleshooting.

I unintentionaly stored it a few months with unstabilized gas in the carb. I could smell the stale stuff when I was choking it up on the 1st start attempts. I drained the float bowl twice to make sure fresh was getting to it. These things auto throttle which I am unfamiliar with and don't know if that could be a factor.

Help.

I have this generator and haven't had a problem with it. I do run the carb dry if I am going to store it for any length of time. If yours is new I'd take it to the closest repair facility for a warranty repair.

Does the fill cap have a vent that needs to be open?

jpeterman57 I have the yamaha 2400 and has never missed a beat in 2yrs, I do however not use the ignition switch, unless I am refuling or will be restarting soon. When I am ready to turn it off, I just shut off the fuel and runn it out of gas (whats in carb) and the switch stays on all the time. I never leave fuel in carb unless using the gen set.

I've had mine for a few years and its never failed to start.

If you could smell the bad gas upon trying to start, then this is the culprit. Take it to a dealer to get the carb serviced.

Two things I do to prevent this from happening...

Every single drop of gas that goes into it is treated with Sta-Bil. Not just when I "think" it won't be used for a period. That period often comes unexpected without warning (like a relative gets sick and you can't go camping for several months). Then it is too late.

I always shut off the fuel valve and let it run out of gas at the end of every trip.

The above two steps, along with regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance will keep that puppy running for years to come.

I would guess there is a vent for the fuel tank. If it is plugged, the symptoms you describe would result. try running it with the fuel cap loose.

Put an inline spark checker on it and study it as the engine quits. It it stops sparking before the engine quits, the problem is something is causing lack of spark. If it continues to spark as the engine runs down, it is probably a fuel problem. You gotta watch closely to do this.
