If you're a Sprint user, Verizon may be looking better and better-- they just announced that they WILL offer tethering on the Droid, starting early next year.

Using your cellphone to connect your laptop to the internet. You 'tether" your cellphone with a USB cable.

It is using a USB cable from you phone to your laptop to obtain an internet connection.
And the OP post is somewhat inaccurate. What is baned is the use of free software to accomplish the tethering. If you pay for the service then you can still tether. So the free loaders are banned which probably is good for the rest of us.

You would think that for someone willing to pay for an "Everything" plan, tethering would be allowed (maybe even included)-- but apparently not. Numerous sources are reporting that you won't be able to tether your smartphone, period-- they want you to buy a second device, with it's own plan.

Cable or even better use bluetooth for a wireless cellphone to laptop connection.

Well, that makes me a little less PO'd that my employer switched me over to AT&T I guess. I can tell you that using my Blackberry tethered to provide an Internet connection from a campground is very handy. Labor day weekend I fixed an Oracle database problem over 2,000 miles away with surprisingly good response and speed.
