Late last Friday night I was pulling my 5er home from a job. I was about 30 miles from home on a narrow section of 2 lane Hwy. when I blew out a spark plug. Immediately I started getting codes coming up. The engine went into 'power saver mode' on a hill and I started blocking traffic. I turned on my Emergency flashers, I was stopped in the middle of the road. I flipped through my Scanguage to the code reader and started deleting codes. I was able to restore power and was able to get to a safe area where I was able to do some Mickey mouse repairs and then go on home.

We've used our ScanGuage II on several occasions to (a) determine the codes listed & we write them down, and (b) delete the codes. Sometimes, we've had to cycle the ignition on and off to keep the codes cleared. Works great.

What is the Scanguage? I am thinking it is a book with information re truck. Am I right? Is this information in the regular truck manual? When we bought our 2008 Sierra we didn't get any manuals with it. We ordered the manuals but haven't given them a good read.

It's odd, and I would not have thought it was an issue, but seemingly when some of the codes are erased the engine runs okay again. On two occasions I have run into folks who were having problems at roadside and had displayed SES lights. I grabbed my code reader and read the codes for them. When the folks asked me to clear the codes the engine then ran smoothly again. My favorite was the time a gasser was barely running with a couple of dead cylinders and the code read "Engine missfire detected.' Duh! It was the only code and when I cleared it the engine started and ran smoothly. Probably there was another issue that caused the problem to begin with, and perhaps it was just coincidence, but it was odd that clearing the codes corrected the issue enough that the trucks ran well again.
There are many code readers out there that work well and can be purchased for less that a single trip to a dealer to have the codes checked. Many auto parts stores shuch as Autozone will read your codes for you for free. They won't clear them for you. Also, if you clear the codes and then want to take the vehicle in to be repaired the repair shop won't do anything until the code is displayed again.
I use my reader to clear a specific code that I get when I tow that is a result of certain modifications I have made to my truck. On a long trip I just make a point of clearing the code every morning before starting out again, along with my moring inspection. If a different code pops up I know I might have a problem.

It's a conspriacy I tell you!
GM is in cahoots with OnStar and in this troubled time they get OnStar to send fault codes to derate the engines of even non-subscribers and hopefully generate repair income or maybe even the purchase of a new truck! Haaar!
The foregoing has been my feeble attempt to generate humour only and not mean't to seriously imply malfeasance on the part of a well-respected automaker.
