Last year there were at least two cases of where Canadians had stopped at the Georgia Welcome center at night and were greeted by a group of 4-5 men who demanded their money.

Sounds to me like that's the WRONG response to the problem. Just what do these people do when they don't GET any money? Wouldn't it be a good idea to report this to the Ga police rather than the RV forum?

Which welcome center, what day and time? Not that I am doubting, just curious as I have never had this happen to me or heard of it either.

I only have experience with US banks in Montana but the MT banks are very appreciative of opening an account, they don't have any service charges and they will even give away gifts contrary to how Canadian banks operate where all they are concerned about are how many service charges they can come up with. What we do is deposit US money into the MT bank checking account which then gives us a US credit card as well as a US debit card and checking privileges. You can set up the account as paperless or they will send the statements to my Canadian address. For us there is no need to have a US address but if that was an issue a post office box in a private business such as a UPS store front would do just nicely at a very low cost. By having a checking account there is no interest earned so US income is not an issue besides at the interest that has been paid in the last 20 years it has not been worth worrying about. Then as others have said we use the Walmart bank for any cash we need with NO services charges of any kind.

Not doubting the veracity of this story, but, I would have thought that the Can. Snowbirds org. among others dedicated to travelling public would be addressing this if it were as blatant an occurrance as described in this post. I'd also think Florida tourism board would want it nipped in the bud quickly as well to safeguard all those tourist dollars flowing south. Georgia on the other hand, I can well understand if their STATE troopers know of a situation but are not predisposed to spend any man hours providing security to a STATE welcome center, that would be too much to expect, right?

No one has posted a $$$ amount. Except AZBrat ~ What can you get for a $20 bill.

Had friends used Debit/ATM cards - neither told the other what they spent -- whatta mess. Don't want one.

Just become some people are irresponsible with their money doesn't mean that the use of Debit cards are bad. A lot of people also have problems writing checks and not telling the other person - - this is a problem with the people involved NOT the vehicle they use to access their accounts!

in California you would need more money because everything is so expensive in California.

too much is the less than the amount of money you could afford to lose

on your person is a wallet or purse or that secret place you Californians use.

locked in RV is good as long as they don't steal the RV

Art I don't think your slam against California is appropiate, It added nothing to the post it was just plain old rude and uncalled for.

Sounds like an urban legand to me!

Two groups of Canadians from the same campground robbed of large amounts of cash in the same Georgia welcome center?
I dont` think so!

As far as Canadians being unarmed,I would rather give up a good chunk of cash than become embroiled in the American judicial system as a foreigner for shooting an American citizen.

A Canadian cannot cross your border with a GUN of any sort without declaring it. Hand guns, forget it....Hunting rifles must be bonded in transit.

Why does no one use Travelers Checks for purchases. We have never had a problem cashing them.

I know they filed state police reports in Georgia before leaving the centre by the end of winter they had heard nothing. I don't know if they did notify associations or they did not. Not my business. Each were obviously shaken. One lost just over $500 and the other just about $300. I didn't investigated but just warned that even though patrolled, there might not be a patrol at a particular time. Some idiots are thinking that this is a made up story. Fine. Go yee forth without any paranoia and volunteer to be the next victim. Have known each for 6 years as neighbors at the same campground. Have no way of knowing if there are others. With all of these negative responses, I kind of wish I had said nothing and let it happen to someone else.

artchoffin: We need to back down a little bit here and remember not to shoot the piano player but rather take your well intentioned advisory for face value and then choose to do what we must to be as secure as possible. You have forewarned us, now it's up to us to be proactive or not.

Thanks for your efforts.
