Last year there were at least two cases of where Canadians had stopped at the Georgia Welcome center at night and were greeted by a group of 4-5 men who demanded their money. I read a previous post about carrying US money on your person. I would not recommend that you carry much cash at all. These Canadian are neighbors of ours at a Florida Campground so I heard the stories first hand.
the m.o.
At night the travelers parked their truck and camper and walked into the centre. When returning to their vehicle the group waved to them from the from the truck as if they knew the travelers. When the Canadians returned to their camper the men surrounded them and demanded their money. This was in the night time and although there is a patrol, the thieves had a lookout who also drove the minivan. When the money was taken the van drove up and the group left promptly. When the state troopers were called there was very little that could be done.
I feel that Canadians are more likely to be targets for this type of robbery. Canadians are more likely to be carrying more cash and they will not be likely to be carrying a weapon for defense.

in California you would need more money because everything is so expensive in California.
too much is the less than the amount of money you could afford to lose
on your person is a wallet or purse or that secret place you Californians use.
locked in RV is good as long as they don't steal the RV

don't you have a debit card, works like money just swipe the card in the machine and it takes the cost of what you are buying from your bank account. no fees.

It is a good thing these criminally minded do not read this forum. Cash can get you killed faster than CC's.
Why do people feel the need to carry much cash?

Carrying LOTS of cash is for drug dealers.
In this day and age, why in the would anyone carry lots of cash anywhere any time, especially when traveling to unfamiliar places?

Wow! No one seems amazed that these folks were held up in a Visitors Center. Security Cameras. People around? That is scary. Are you sure it wasn't a toll booth?

When and where did this happen? I did a couple of searches but could not find anything.
As for carrying large amounts of cash, then no it does not make any sense when travelling in your own country. However, once you start crossing borders, then it becomes a different situation. Debit & credit cards used in another country are subject to all kinds of hidden charges & fees which many, including folks on these forums are not aware of.
I would agree that the cost savings in taking cash may not be worth the extra risk involved. I would guess that these people were taking their park fees for the entire winter down there?
Never miss an opportunity to walk on the grass.
