Hello;
We have just acquired a 1992 Triple E Comander and we have a couple of questions if there is anyone who has owned one of these units in the past.
We are looking to maintain the roof of the motorhome, most sites ask if the roof is fiberglass or aluminium. Our gut feeling is to say it is fiberglass. Is that correct?
The second issue is the towing capacity. the transmission was recntly rebuilt, the unit has a large transmission cooler and seems to have lots of power. In the manual the specs for towing are only 300 lbs. tongue weight and 3000 lbs. GTW. this seems a little low. The issue as far as we can see is the whimpy trailer hitch. We intend to use a weight distribution hitch, after we take the motorhome to a welding shop and have the hitch beefed up. Has anyone had any experience towing with this vehicle.

if you can identify the chassis you're on it will help on the towing side. some of those vintage chassis had only 3500# ratings due to frame extensions - not often horsepower or braking.
I've not owned a Triple E (rented a few) but I *think* they only used Fiberglass roofs

My 85 has rubber... not sure if it's original or not, though.

Our 99 F53 34 Foot Commander had a Rubber Roof that we were never to use petroleum distillates for cleaning. Contact Triple E directly, they are very helpful and willing to help any Triple E product owner.

I just googled 1992 Triple E Commander, No info on the roof, but that model 961 is a great looking coach.

My 2006 is rubber. I use Protect All on it... totally wonderful stuff, both the cleaner and the protector.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I now have a starting point to try to resolve some of my issues. Understanding what the question they are really asking helps solve the riddle. The comment about not using petrolium based cleaners starts to explain why the question as to why they wish to know the information about roof construction. The comment about the frame was likewise helpful and the focus of that fix will likely be 'beefing' it up to take the extra load and the possible addition of airbags to increase the weight carrying capability as the overhang will in all likelyhood multiply the load.
The next question I do have is how sturdy is the roof. I notice in the youtube videos of cleaning the roof they are freely walking on the roof. Has anyone had experience with this motorhome, it doesn't have a roof rack, although I would like to add one to carry hay to horse shows.

We had a 1993 Empress from Triple E. It had a fibreglass roof. We now have an Empress DP with an EPDM roof. Yours is likely fibreglass, and you won't have any issues walking on it, or storing hay.
The hitch is limited by the chassis, not the HP. How big a horse trailer are you wanting to tow? We pulled a two-horse unit without issues.
You bought yourself a great motorhome by the way. Triple E's are the cat's a**.

The frames may be the limiting factor for the 3000 lb towing limit, but the original hitch itself is likely to be rated close to that number too. The rating is stamped right on it. If you are able to beef up the frame sufficiently you will likely have to install a new higher rated hitch too.

From your comment about hauling hay on the roof, is one to assume you are planning to tow a horse trailer? I don't know of any class A GAS thats rated over 5k lbs. for towing. Might need to rethinki your plans
