Have you updated your PRL version in the last month or so?
For your Verizon cellphone use *22899 which updates PRL and updates programming.
In regard to your Verizon cellular broadband modem:
Not to do a manual PRL update is a mistake. Basically, your cellular broadband modem has a list of Preferred Roaming List (or PRL) embedded in the card. This list tells your card which towers to look for when establishing connection. As new EVDO towers are installed, your PRL will be out of date and you may be in an EVDO area, but your card doesn't have the tower in the list, so the tower is invisible. So, it is a good idea to update your PRL monthly. For those with any Verzion provided cellular broadband modem you can update your device by using Verzion's VZAccess Manager software. Start VZAccess Manager but do not connect.. now, go to "Options". Now, select "Activation" and re-activate your device. Only takes about 30 seconds or so. Does all without any input from you. By the way, some cellular broadband modems supposedly do PRL updates automatically... key word supposedly. Only takes a minute to do a reactivation to be 100% sure your PRL is current. Remember, those using their cellular broadband modem inserted in a router, this means every month or so remove the device from the router and plug it directly into your laptop and do as I mentioned above and then re-insert the cellular broadband modem in the router.

Bill, I just did this the other day, but dialed *228. What's the difference between that number and the one with the two "9's" at the end?

We normally have our USB modem in a router, but when I do put it in the computer and start the Manager, I'll often get a message that it's updating the programming.

Verizon's web site has some information about this and instructions on how to do it. The web site says *228. I just did it for the first time in a while. There was some very scratchy "hold" music while it reprogrammed. It took about 30 seconds, and then the phone reset itself after I hung up.

Use *22899 which updates PRL AND updates programming in one easy step.

Lets say that I am in WA and do the PRL update. Is the update for all of the US or only for a certain area. Would I have to do an update anytime I move from WA into CA, then into AZ?
The hotshots at VZ said I would have to do an update whenever I moved from one area to another.

What "programming" is updated? All I can find out about *22899 is that it bypasses the automated voice asking you to choose an option and goes directly to option #2, which is updating the prl. I did find one site that says it programs a new phone.

I disagree with you explanation. It does NOT update the list of towers. It updates which other providers to use when ROAMING. That is why it is call Preferred Roaming List. If a tower is added to the Verizon network you will see it anytime you are in range.

You are welcome to disagree with my explanation. Here is more on PRL updating and why. Maybe my explanation is not picture perfect but still updating PRL is important.
