You can get the yellow plastic containers at Home Depot, Lowes and ACE Hardware.
They cost around $8 and you don't want to run a diesel out of fuel. I carry 4 extra with me when I get on the road just for peace of mind. Had to use them a couple of times.

Unless your driving a short bed with the small 25 or so gallon tank. I see no need to carry 5-10 extra gallons. Different stokes.

As of right now I have and use a 5 gal container that I purchased at a motercycle shop, I know you have seen them, they are about a foot square and almost 24" tall and a long hose on the cap,all dirt bike riders have them sitting in the bed of there trucks, yellow, red, blue several colors, mine is almost 20 years old and still going strong, been droped, kicked, and cussed at. I'll use this untill I get my transfer tank ( I hope ) for the back of the TV, then it will be for my honda generators when we go to Q-site.

If you're going to use fuel cans, I'd highly recommend you stick to military jerry cans. Commercial fuel cans feel like toys compared to their military counterparts.

Unfortunately, the scourge of CARB has infested the rest of the US and they are getting very hard to find.

The good, bad and the ugly of military jerry cans can be read here: http://www.rocketcityrockcrawlers.com/me........rstuff/al/Jerry%20Can%20Paper%20V1.3.pdf

The source and price data are outdated, but the tech info isn't, it's just going to be harder to find good military jerry cans now.

Good luck.

My 06 crewcab chevy only has a 26 gallon tank so basically when i get around 200 miles on the tank i've already been looking for a gas station. On a trip few months ago not sure where we going for 2 wks, just got in and drove, i took two 5 gallon tanks strapped in the bed and i felt better not having to worry about will we make it since we went places we have never been before. After we got home i poured both tanks into the truck and put the tanks away until the next trip. Someday i'm hoping to get a 56 gallon tank installed underneath. SOMEDAY

The OP is afraid or running out or fuel. Will carrying extra really help the situation? Seems to me that a couple of extra cans of fuel, sitting as an emergency supply, will probably go bad before they are actually needed.
I know that starting out, it is scary thinking about using diesel fuel, but it is not as hard to find as one might think.

Out west where it can be 100+ miles between fuel stations it is a very good idea to have extra capacity. I have a toolbox fuel tank combo and regularly run 300+ miles towing. It is so convienient to be able to park the trailer for the night, unhook, go to breakfast and get fuel in the morning and then hitch and go. I don't have to negotiate tight fuel stations with the trailer in tow.

I had one of those early Duramax's, you know, the ones that were advertised as the greatest heavy duty towing machine to date! Yeah right, they put a wimpy little 26 gallon tank in the thing. Dumb! I installed a 50 gal tool/tank with an aux pump in the bed and ran a line from the top of the tank to the fill tube of the truck by making my own fitting and cutting into that rubber extension hose from the tank to the fill door. Worked great till I got rid of the chevy and ordered my sig. truck with 200 gal capacity. Fuels not a problem now.

I worry at time about running out of diesel. I can't afford an extra fuel tank but thought of carrying extra fuel in a can in the bed of the truck. I have stored gas in plastic cans before and they seemed to leak or at least I could smell some gas. Are metal cans better or have I just bought cheap plastic cans that leaked.
Thanks for any help.

Buy a couple 5-7 gallon jugs, empty them into your tank when you get back from your trip, and store them for the next trip. Keep them strapped down in your bed (maybe with a chain, depending on where you're traveling) and watch for wear. You can buy a =lot= of $10 jugs for the cost of an external tank. I have a SWB Duramax with a 25 gallon tank and you can bet that I plan my routes based on no more than 10 mpg. Sometimes I carry a spare can, sometimes I don't. My preference would be an OEM-style extra-capacity tank under the bed, but I can't get anyone to tell me if any of the different brands will fit my truck with my B&W hitch installed. Easiest solution is a nurse tank in the bed with a simple 12v pump; more sophisticated is one with manual operation to refill the main tank via the vent line or a secondary filler line. Complexity goes up from there.

We carried 3 - 5 gallon plastic diesel fuel (yellow) jugs for several years. Last year we got a 50-gallon tank in the bed of the truck. So much nicer!
