Recently, I run down my battery to low and my Dell went into "hibernation". I hooked up to AC and the battery charged and the computer works fine. However, the battery light on the computer flashes four times orange, them turns green and then repeats. Normally the light is solid green. I've pulled the battery to reset, but no change. Any idea how to get it back to normal?

You didn't say which Dell you have.

From the Dell site:

Blinking: Amber-Amber-Amber-Amber-Green = Temporary Battery Failure

That was on an Inspiron page.

Most times when a dell flashes orange when charging the battery has a short in it and least on the ones I have seen.

Thanks Tom, I would have thought the blinking would have stopped once I charged the battery. It is an Inspiron.

My experience is that just one time, running down a lithium-ion battery too low, can kill it. I don't say this will kill it, but it can kill it. Also, with regular use of battery power in a laptop, discharging to the "warning" point, this battery type is good for 1 to 2 years at best, sometimes less.

Did the battery really recharge, so that you can run on battery power?

I don't know the Dell flash codes, I stopped buying Dell laptops after the fifth one went belly up. I'm a slow learner.

I also have a 9300 Inspiron and the battery is doing the same but it shows as being fully charged and runs off the battery fine and recharges. It is annoying to see the flashing light.

The battery still works and recharges, but I notice the battery life is down from almost 2 hours to a little over 1 hour. I've had this Dell almost 5 years and it's the original battery. I very seldom use it on battery power, but I guess it may be time to replace it. I've been all over Dells website trying to find out what the code means, but no luck. I was on a Dell forum and the flashing orange light seems to be a common problem and no one knows what it means. I'll get a new battery and if that doesn't work, a piece of duct tape will.

My old dell did the light flash. I ran the batttery down to nothing again and recharged it and the light never flashed again. Could have been a coincidense but it seemed to work.
