For $250 and lower I can get a compact refrigerator from Lowes. It is not an RV refrigerator but fits my budget. Could I not use it with shore power when in camp and use ice if not plugged up? I looked at ones at the truck stop and plugging into the cigarette lighter won't work in my situation. Has anyone used something other than the standard sort of RV refrigerators in their units? bought one like you describe a couple of years ago at Sams. Under $180 and had a "locking door" ...worked perfect in our 1985 HR Alumlite 5vr when on shore power.

Obviously propane won't work with it, but it sounds workable if you use generator while on road. Shouldn't have to worry about being out of level damaging the ammonia operating system. Problem would be boondocking without propane unless your system will work with an inverter, but the power draw may be too much.

I think it is a bit beyond your current budget, but there are at least a couple of sources for re-conditioned RV fridges (Google search for "rebuilt RV fridge") starting at about $625.
I see nothing wrong with your plan, though.

I did that a few years ago. When travelling, we just kept the door shut and the fridge stayed cold for many hours.
That won't work for dry camping, however.\
