It's a fairly easy project. Give it a try. Main thing is the routing of the wires. Don't be afraid to run wires outside and attached to frame if that's the best route.

I would ask if anyone has installed or used a back-up camera in this manner. I'm just about always towing my horse trailer with my Class C and would like to be able to see the horses inside the trailer while towing. Additionally I would like to having a functioning rear view camera when not towing the horse trailer. Anyone ever installed such a system where one can choose which camera to view from. Also what kind of connections would one need or use for the camera cord at the trailer hitch, when hooking & un-hooking the trailer. Is this a plausible system?

I do a similar thing with two wireless cameras.

One camera is mounted on the license plate bracket, aimed at the hitch for aiding trailer hook-ups and the other camera has the tabs cut-off and is pop riveted high-up, to a drip rail for backing up.

I only used one montor. Each camera gets power from a separate Ford dash up-fitter switch. Turn the camera power switch on and off to switch between the two cameras.

For your application, to get switchable power inside the trailer, Radio Shack or most Trailer supply stores sell two wire disconnect male and female plugs. You could even power a light inside the trailer with these same wires to aid watching the horses at night.

I also installed the camera myself and proud of it. I am not very handy but got great advice from RVCAMS.com
I placed the camera under the rear light above the window, by drilling a hole into the wall. This hurt me the most, the thought of making a hole. But it was ok. Passed the wire through the cabinets and into the rear storage. Then under the trailer I ran the wire next to all the other wires and zipped tied it to the other wires. Traveled to the front of the driver side and entered the cab where the fire wall opening is. The wire then passed behind the dash.
Works great and has not failed me yet.

If you're concerned about poking holes in the outside skin you could consider what a friend of mine did he had a rig with a window in the back wall).

First off, he mounted a fairly big mirror on the inside wall above the back window, angled at 45 degrees. Then he mounted the camera vertically on the inside wall, looking up at the mirror. Nothing required a hole to outside and by messing with the camera zoom and the angle of the mirror, he got a very good view of outside and it was mirror image, like a regular rear-view mirror, which made it much easier to interpret.

Is it pre-wired for rear monitor, from some point in the rear cap to some point in the cab? Some upperline C's are "monitor-ready."

If it is, the easiest DIY would be a camera and monitor system that can use the existing wiring. If not, the hardest part of the job will be routing the wiring, and it will be up to you to decide where you want it to go, how much of it you want to hide.

I was just getting ready to post the same thing and came across this post. I recieved my camera yesterday and am brainstorming installation ideas. I am slightly concerned about a reverse light that I have in the center of the rear about 6 feet off the ground after reading about the clearance light issue. I liked the idea of running the camera wire through the fridge vent. I don't mind drilling a hole in the back but I am worried about getting the wire down through the back wall to where I pull it down to the underside. My current plan is to mount everything in the cab and run the camera wire in the driveway so we can move the camera around by hand to find the best mounting place before we drill anything.

Actually, since most rear-view cameras can be set for either "normal" or "mirror image", as preferred by the user, interpretation is not an issue.

I just put a camera from my trailer back to the truck. I had a "professional" do it and it is not quite right so I have to do it over a little on my own, no problem! For me the biggest problem is getting the wire from the trialer to the truck, I bought a heavey duty plug from trailer to truck. But I having a little problem placing at a good location. If there are pictures of installations out there I would like to see them. Thanks in advance, luxford@t-one.net
