This has probably been answered numerous time, but please have patience and answer it one more time.
When emptying the black tank, do you wait until it is empty to use the tornado or do you turn it on while the tank is emptying?
Thanks.

I turn mine on when I open the valve. I don't open it before because I am afraid I might get distracted and then it would be filling the tank with disastrous results.

I always wait until the tank has emptied first. If I have time, I ignore the warnings not to, and close the valve and partially refill the tank again and then flush again as necessary. Another trick I've tried that seems to work, is pour some liquid detergent into the hose before connecting it to the water supply so it sprays the detergent all over the tank, then again fill and flush. Now before anyone jumps all over me, I only do this if there is nobody else waiting.

Here is the way I do mine. I install a clear plastic elbow from Walmart. Pull the dump valve. As it's emptying, I hook up the water hose to Tornado. Buy this time the tank is usually emptied. I turn on the Tornado, when the water starts to flow clear, I close the dump valve and dump the Gray tank. When that is drained, I close the valve and reopen the black tank. If that is still clean, then I'm done and shut the dump valve, turn off the Tornado and put the hoses away. Bill

Take your garden hose and spray it into an empty 5gal. pail. See the spray hit the bottom of the pail with force.
Now fill the pail and put the garden hose in the water. The force of the spray is absorbed by the water. No cleaning action.

Agreed-I use mine after the tank has emptied. Then the tornado can spin freely. It uses the force of the water splashing to do the cleaning.I also slosh my tank while driving.I do this by adding a couple of gallons of clean water after cleaning. This helps break up and unstick any missed matter. The clear elbo is a must have. Some folks add detergent or even water softener.

I agree with the clear elbow, you can really see when you are running clear. I also subscribe to the water softener in the holding tank, works like a charm! This is a great link explaining holding tank maintenance http://www.newrver.com/holdingtank.html

No fancy chemicals needed. Certainly no poisons tinted blue or chlorine!
All ya need is Odorlos(tm) and maybe a shot of enzymes to get it all working and keep it working.

Pretty much the same as campdaddy and Polishnurse. Like the idea of the detergent in the hose - think we may try that this weekend. Makes sense that it would help clean the tank better than water alone.

Thank you, all of you. I do have the clear elbow, but just was questioning the procedure. I need to start adding water as soon as I drain it at the park. I have been waiting until I get home to add water and a blue "cube". I am also going to get the water softener.
I have printed your responses.
Thanks again.
