the best time to start digging is one to two hours before low tide and looks like Dec. 4/5 will be late -- so be sure to take lights and/or lanterns

Thanks Boomer! I want to expose my kids to as many happy times as possible. Hopefully they will keep clam on the drive over. 
I'm going to pick up a couple of clam guns (yeah, I'm a lazy digger), some headgear lights, I have plenty of buckets, and a 3 day license for wife and I.
I think clam digging is an excuse for adults to camp, drink beer, and make clam chowder, but that's me.

I think clam guns are easier for kids than shovels - and the lighter weight the better.
And since a clam "digs" towards the ocean - don't put the clam gun directly over the hole - rather place it with the hole close to the top so that most of the gun is towards the ocean {although if the clams aren't very deep, then you have to adjust slightly -- so they're less apt to get broken}
Sometimes it takes more than one try with a clam gun and SOMETIMES you may have ALREADY pulled those tricky little clams out - so always give those plugs of sand a good kick {or dig in pairs and have your partner check for ya}
Razor clams are way faster than most folks think ... especially in softer sand.
Go out before it gets dark and stomp around looking for "shows" or holes - so that the kids know what they're looking for. You can even start digging earlier than 2 hrs if it's a really low tide.
AND PLAN TO GET WET ... so PREplan for the RV
The PNW is definitely one of the best places to live with a WIDE DIVERSITY of terrific things to do with kids  ENJOY!!

Grayland is terrific for beach access, but it's really hard to get reservations. The new sites out front mentioned above are totally primo. Full hookups, private, and very pretty. Get online way ahead of time for those. See https://secure.camis.com/WA/.

Kalaloch is part of Olympic National Park. It is by far and away the most beautiful beach on the Washington coast and it has a campground. But being part of the NP, sites are small and primitive. But what a view.

Got two spots booked, right on the beach! Our neighbors and their kids are joining us (as usual...we always camp together!)

Be sure to check when razor clam digging is allowed on the beach you plan to go to. Kalaloch is only scheduled to be open for digging one day this month (Nov 16).
