Just to keep things in perspective, seasonal flu kills an average of 36,000 per year, so thats 3000 per month in the US. H1N1 has killed what, a total of 2000 so far.

Funny how a new and currently milder variety of flu scares us more than something that is 18,000 times worse. I would make sure I had the seasonal flu shot first, and get the H1N1 when and if they have enough.

The Beave, 18 times worse (not 18,000) using your numbers, but after a summer hiatus the second wave of H1N1 flu is just starting so give it time. This thing seems to affect some otherwise healthy children and young folks more than the seasonal flu and that has people spooked. Lets hope that at the end of the day that the numbers are still well below the seasonal flu levels. Here seniors are advised to get the seasonal flu shot first but it's the opposite for other folks.

There is so much incorrect information about the H1N1.Wearing a mask-- good
protection, hand washing???---this virus is an air borne version not contact.Washing hands is a good thing however no matter what.Absolute media hysteria driven, read and listen to practical medical wisdom for the truth or something close to it.

I was at the Harlingen VA Health Clinic yesterday. During the time I was there, I likely saw well over 150 come and go. And while a few had masks on, and the clinic had implemented procedures to help stop any spread of flu, I didnt see any older vets who appeared to be suffering from the flu. I also think that if the clinic staff was seeing flu patients, they would have been far more overt in offering masks, and separating out patients with flu symptoms. One younger vet, under 30, appeared to have flu like symptoms. So what I would conclude is that retirees in the RGV are generally avoiding the flu. The clinic also didnt have many that came on a walk-in basis, and that would mean that immediate need flu patients werent there. 98% of the ones there, were there for a normally scheduled appointment, made well in advance.

The biggest problem with H1N1 is the SECONDARY infections that occur when your system is stressed. Pneumonia and bronchitis are the biggest problems. Few people actually die from the H1N1 itself, just as few die from "normal" flu bugs. It's the secondary infections that get you. And those can be either bacterial or viral problems.

Hand washing will help you not get any flu or cold, as most of these bugs can be deposited on faucets/door handles etc. If you touch one that someone who is infected did, and then touch your mouth, nose or eyes, it is possible that you could catch it(just like the common cold). Most of these bugs are good for about 3 hours on these surfaces. Do what mom always said...Wash your hands and cover your coughs. This advice will protect both you and your neighbor.

And I agree that the media is just hyping the heck out of this!

I got my normal flu shot this year, like I have for the past 20 years due to my job. Also got a pneumonia shot because it has been 10 years since my last one. But I have yet to get the H1N1 because I'm not in one of the really endangered groups. If I get sick with H1N1, I'll just do as I do with any flu bug. Drink a lot of fluids, take some pain killers and wait 3 days. If I get better, great! If I have a seeming relapse(secondary infection), I'll go to the doc...

Well...here in Southeast Missouri(Misery) the new flu has closed a few schools, but I know of no senior adult who has been infected with it. My wife and I have traveled in 9 different planes in the past four weeks....been in NYC, New England, and in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico....and have not had a cough, sneeze, or drippy nose. And....neither of us have had the shot or have worn a mask. So, I don't think that being in the RGV is any more "dangerous" for getting the flu than being enclosed on 9 different planes!

(Having said all of that, I will probably get sick tomorrow!)

Tripalot

We have been here in the Valley for almost 3 weeks. Couldn't get the regular flu shot in Ontario before we left since we are not 65. Last week in the park we were able to purchase the regular flu shot. Haven't decided if we will get the H1N1 yet. Not hearing much of the flu down here.

Had a bad cold before I came down and had to get a script from the Dr. but ok now.

Haven't been to Padre yet. Red Tide is there and is killing fish etc. Suppose to low to moderate so maybe soon I can go. Had an experience with that in Florida years ago and gave me a terrible cough for weeks so I'll stay away until cleared.

Trying to drink lots of Margaritas to keep the germs away.

Anyone else notice that when all this first srated it was hysteria created by the media...subsequently died down to almost nothing....and then when they come up with a vaccine the hysteria started all over again by the media???
