The only time we decided to take a wad of cash with us ended up being a harrowing experience! I "made" a special hiding place in the travel trailer to hide the cash. On the second day into our trip south to Arizona, the winds of Wyoming picked us off the Interstate and slamed us upside down into the median, destroying both our truck and travel trailer! The trailer was reduced to sticks and bits of fiberglass. Without tipping off the recovery people what we were looking for, it took three days to locate the "money box" and retreive our money! From then on we take a bit of cash and two Mastercards. If they charge a transaction fee....OH WELL! It's a small price to pay for security and piece of mind.

Excellent information...we recently cashed in our points and got $200 gift cards for Shell fuel. Card paid in full every month, no interest, and gift cards as a bonus.

Set up an account at a US bank. I set mine up at Bank of America in Blaine WA, I used my Canadian address, just needed my passport. Got a temp card on the spot, and the fancy one a week or two later.
Convert your CAN -> USD at a currency exchange NOT A BANK. My SIL works for a major bank and even does this. The currency exchange I deal with will even hold your money and exchange it when the rate hits what you specify.
I carry US cash across the border (keep you bank withdrawal receipt and exchange receipt with you) and deposit it as soon as I'm across the line. Don't forget 10k or more and you have to declare it ... not a problem for me.

Yes you can get a debit card the same day, however depending on what form you are depositing funds, you may have to wait up to sixty days to access those funds. A cashiers check is relatively quick. Cash is instant to access. Wells Fargo informed us that due to fraud and the economy, that until your cheque or whatever clears your home bank, they will not release those funds. What we now do is, send funds to our US account over the summer, and also cross the line with enough cash, just in case.

Never flash your cash! I spent more than 11 weeks traveling this year. I was amazed at how many people I saw flashing their money. I carry only a small amount in my pocket at anytime, then replenish in private.
