Its difficult for Canadians that want to hold US cash. I know that RBC will set up a US funds account for you. I use an ING account with a US account attached to it. I expect the other chartered banks have similar accounts available. Make sure you have a debit card to access it from the US.

No problem having a US $ account, but I have been unable to find a place that will allow debit card access to the account. I hate having to pay a 2 1/2% premium to get my money changed from Cdn. to US $ so we usually haul cash (or travelers checks) with us and use the credit cards sparingly. There are lots of places that now will refuse travelers checks as they are being stolen and forged a lot by the bad guys.

Your best bet if you travel frequently to the states is to open a US bank account and keep some money here for when you travel. Access it with your debit card and problem solved.
If its a one time trip or rare trip then just bring travelers checks. Holding lots of cash is asking for trouble.

Ok, banks are evil, just mail all your money to me, then just call me when you want some and I'll mail back it to you.  Come on it'll be safe with me, just ask me.

Come the the better end of KY and you can get $100 per purchase. 
We just did a 1400 trip and debt card was all we used on the trip. Flashing cash can be dangerous in some places.

use a credit card . everybody takes them .if stolen you can act on it fast .just keep a couple hundred on hand. we travel every where on our card .its easy to keep track at the end of your juorney.

Do you have am ATM card from your bank, if so, why not just use that to get cash. That is what we do when we travel outside the US, works fine for us. My cards only charge a 1% surcharge on transactions outside US.
Another thought would be a VISA gift card, once you buy it, it works like a debit card. Not sure what it costs to buy one, but don't think it is much ($4-5?)

Visa gift cards are a pain to use. There is almost no way to find out the balance, and clerks get somewhat grumpy when you pull them out. Google gift card problems and Visa will be at the top of the list.

My advice is to get a debit card at a LOCAL bank where you live and ask that it be a debit card with international features (like VISA). It's by far the easiest way to handle money when traveling in a foreign country since it will often do the currency conversion for you automatically. If you shop carefully you can usually find someplace that will offer a card that does this with no fees involved in the transaction. That's the method I used when traveling in Canada this summer and it was so easy that it was just like traveling at home. The only difference is you won't know the EXACT amount of your purchase until the transaction clears the bank and has the exchange rate applied.
