We are getting ready for our road trip. We went to plug the vacuum in and the outlets are dead. Why?????

We tried while plugged into shore power and while the generator was running. AC works on both. (AC only works on 120) Lights are brighter while plugged in. DH used his handy dandy multimeter. Power is coming in and going out on the circuit breakers.

so.... why are the 3 120 power outlets not working? What else are we missing?

Sounds like there is a tripped GFI outlet that these circuits branch off from.

If you can figure which outlet is the 1st in the circuit, you may have to replace the outlet. I would assume that the GFI is the first one, and I'm assuming that you are getting voltage there, since you mentioned checking that.

Could be that either the connections from that outlet or the connections on the next outlet in line (probably the closest one) may be loose or faulty.

With the power off (at genset and shore power, as well as the inverter (if you have one), pull the cover off the outlets and check to see if there is any power coming into/out of them at the side connections.

If there is a problem at one, you can either try and re-tightening it, or replace it. Remember, when they build these things, they are going low dollar on these kinds of parts!!

Might be nice to know what model RV you have....there might be circuit breakers or something??

Good Luck in your search!!

Bad GFCI receptacle or the feed through function on that GFCI has failed. Pull GFCI receptacles and test for power on load side.

IF it isn't a GVI it may be a regular circuit breaker has tripped.

And if it isn't a tripped breaker or bad/tripped GFCI, I'd look for a loose wire coming out of either the breaker if all the receptacles in the circuit are dead, or coming out of a receptacle or GFCI if only the downstream outlets are dead. Don't forget to check the neutral (white wires) - if either wire is loose the outlets will be dead. Finding the corresponding neutral in the breaker box may be difficult - if you are sure all possible sources of power are off (unplugged from shore power, generator & inverter off) I'd tighten all of the neutrals - they sometimes loosen from vibrations...

Note that with some GFI outlets if they every trip from a fault they will never reset again so you have to replace them.

The Leviton GFI in my rig is this type. It will reset of course whenever you are "testing" it but if you, say, somehow get it wet so it trips .... you're out of luck and have to buy a new one. Leviton calls this a "new feature" of their GFI's. Very frustrating until you figure this out about your "supposedly good" GFI - I know from experience. (Can be expensive too at maybe $15 each - plus your time to install another one.)

I'm only suggesting this because it happened to me. Our inverter failed, & I found out that 7 outlets work through the inverter. Even though we never turn the inverter on, the power for these 7 outlets gets passed through the inverter. All other outlets & appliances work ok. Just something else to check.
