....one thing to keep in mind:

The ratio of confirmed infected to confirmed moralities will ALWAYS be much higher in developing and underdeveloped countries!

Bear in mind that most if not all members of this forum are products of countries (Canada, US, and Europe) with the very highest of health standards; i.e. "we" are basically superhuman, and have a level of immunity and general health never before achieved since the advent of humans on Earth.

In concluding, there are statistical tails within which the immunocompromised exist, however their numbers are very, very few in comparison to the healthy millions. Get to know if you are one among the particularly vulnerable, then seek out the appropriate remediation. And finally, practice the same sanitation when here or on the road in a developing country. Hopefully, this should give some perspective to the A/H1N1 debate here...

Cheers,

First article I have seen that admits that while young people are more likely to catch H1N1, older (50 year and beyond) are more likely to die from it. Something that the CDC does not want to highlight as they don't have enough vaccine for the existing first tier individuals so the last thing they want is another group id'd in need of the vaccine.

Mod, if I said something too political, please just edit my post but leave the article up. Thanks!

Roc:

From the same reporting on the JAMA, but from Med-Broadcast:

"Even though the numbers of elderly hospitalized and dying are relatively small, "that small proportion that are hospitalized who are elderly should be watched because they are at a higher risk of having a bad outcome once hospitalized."

So, of the test group of 1088 patients, the elderly, and, those over 50, made up a *very, very small* segment of the sample!

"Data so far indicates that infection with H1N1 results in relatively mild illness and that most people who become ill are younger: 40 percent are aged 10 to 18, and 95 percent are under the age of 50"

Thus, if we extrapolate from the test group the same statistic, 5% over the age of 50, then we get a mere: 54 patients; now 20% mortality rate among this cohort is a minuscule: 10.8 deaths. No wonder the CDC had not upped the priority vaccine delivery for those 50 and over!!

Now check this out, "More than two-thirds (68 percent) of the patients had other conditions, including obesity, that put them at higher risk for more severe illness due to the flu."

Now that my friends is pretty scary! I'm re-thinking my earlier post on "general level of healthy Americans" at least in the LA health-care service territory, and will do more research on this.

Cheers,

The reason why there is a shortage, at least up here, is because the shots were to be given out in stages. Priority lists were developed.

However, despite priority lists, people who did not fit the list lined up anyway. To make it worse, many places decided to let these people get the shots anyway, resulting in many being turned away (including some on the list). Now there is a shortage... SURPRISE!!!!!

I know many medical professionals who are refusing to get the shot. One reason is that they feel not enough testing was done. Remember way back when people were getting vaccinated against (I believe) polio... then there were plenty of deformed children being born to women who were pregnant when they got the shot? Not enough testing done there either, obviously...

In addition, since many more people die annually from the regular flu than have died from this H1N1, the only reason why people are in such a rush to get this particular vaccination is simply media fear mongering causing unnecessary panic and anxiety.

Well, guess what - it's not all swine flu. The CDC stopped testing cases in October, when the vaccine became available. My 7 yr old grand-daughter, who lives in the hinterlands - outside of other human contact got sick and got over it rather quickly. It wasn't swine flu at all! It was strep throat. Here are the indicators of swine flu: blue or grayish skin colour, low grade fever, diahrea, vomiting, fast breathing, trouble staying awake or alert.
