With everything you have said, might I suggest you visit Tucson or El Paso instead. There have been 7k deaths reported in Mexico from the H1N1. Also, as I recall the Govt. and our military (US) have suggested not to travel to Mexico due in part to the crime issue.

Not sure where you got the number of 7000? Sounds like scare tatics. In our state alone there are 40 deaths as of today.

La Secretaría de Salud informó que se tienen registrados, de marzo a la fecha, 52 mil 67 casos confirmados de influenza A H1N1 y 354 defunciones derivadas del virus.

The Secretary of Health stated "since March there have been 52,067 confirmed cases of H1N1 virus and 354 deaths contributed to the virus.

De los fallecidos, precisó, 52% fueron hombres y 48% mujeres. De esas muertes, 70.3% se registró en personas de entre 20 y 54 años de edad.

Of these deaths, 52% were men and 48% women. Of these deaths, 70.3% are persons between 20 and 54 years of age.

The Pan American Health Organization gives official totals by country. To date, according to the PAHA, total deaths associated with the H1N1 in Mexico are 278.

There are several of us already here in Zihua- left Canada long before anyone got sick and before there was any vaccine available, so no shots for us. I was told by our doctor here that there will not be vaccinations available in Mexico. We were asking about the shot because we will be leaving from here at the end of March to spend 3 months RVing in Europe. He suggested that if we want the shot to get someone to bring us a couple of doses. We had to explain to him that Canada will not just give out doses for people to take to another country. He seemed quite surprised at that. I guess we'll just wait & see what the situation is in Europe shortly before we go. Don't know what options we might have at that point.

Meantime, while we're waiting for the H1N1 vaccine to be available to whichever group we qualify for, there are some things we can do to protect ourselves. I think we've all heard these measures, but I'll repeat anyhow. It'll be good practice for me, and maybe I'll remember my own advice.

Wash hands frequently. Soap and water are cheap when compared to a hospital stay!

Buy and USE hand sanitizers freely. I have one in my purse, a pump sanitizer next to every sink in my house, and one on my desk.

Cover our mouths when sneezing, coughing or if we feel at all 'out of sorts'.

If we feel sick, STAY HOME!! I know that's going to be a hard one for me, but I'll manage. My neighbors call me 'La Vaga' for good reason.

And, maybe more important than any of the other precautions: Keep our hands away from our faces!

My 14-year old grandson in Illinois had H1N1 (confirmed by laboratory testing) a few weeks ago, and the rest of his family avoided it by following the precautions above. My daughter and son in law cleaned the house, top to bottom, using clorox wipes on every possible surface that my grandson might have touched since being exposed to the virus. Neither they, nor their other son, got the virus.

I don't know what the plans for the vaccine are here in Sinaloa, other than that it'll be offered to the high risk group first, as is only right. I don't know if it's going to be offered to foreigners before every Mexican national has been covered. I'm not expecting it to be offered to me before it's given to a Mexican family, that's for sure.

One final note: the Mexican government has reacted to the virus in a way that the US govt (I won't speak for the Canadian govt) should be reacting, and, therefore, the cases are far fewer here right now than in the US. Two cases of the H1N1 in a school here, and the school is closed for up to a week, and totally sanitized, before being opened again. One of my sons is a Jr High principal in the US. He has told me, in frustration, that his School Board is hoping that all of the students get exposed to the flu so they'll be immune, and that the schools are not being closed, even when there are 5 or 14 or more kids out sick with the 'flu'. He's also frustrated that the students who are sick are not being tested, in order to confirm or disprove the H1N1 virus.

Ok, it's time for Lee to get off her soapbox! Stay well, everyone, and enjoy your travels! Lee

Did all that and still caught it. I was standing in a line when this idiot sneezed. I was about 6 feet away but remembered seeing a Documentary on TV about H1N1 saying the infected droplets will easily travel 10 feet from a sneeze. I stepped away quickly looked at him and could see he was sick. A little over 24 hours later I was sick. Luckily a light case but today is day 8 with little improvement, at least I am not getting worst. The scary part was we were in Denver in our RV away from our Docs so we headed home in AZ quickly. We were suppose to go on to California but decide we were better off at our home, near our Docs & Facilities.

We are hanging tough here in B.C., breaking a seven year tradition of hitting the road south as soon as we could after colder weather arrived. There have been promises of general vaccinations for H1N1 by the end of November but, given where that statement came from, we should get ours at the earliest just before the end of the year. Of course, I hope to be wrong there.
Someone mentioned Canada's "free health care." It is only free if you don't pay taxes, and Canadians know we are taxed in a multitude of ways, so its not free, in fact you already paid for it, probably a few years ago!

Rocmoc, we hope for your speedy recovery! Your experience and proximity to your southern border has given this Forum a lot of valued and appreciated information.

Thank you dave.

Interesting article of the problems in just AZ.

Please don't start a USA health care debate. If you wish to, start another topic.

Linda, apparently the H1N1 vaccine has a limited shelf life, at least the vaccine being dispensed here in Canada. Some provinces are not sending the vaccine out to doctor's offices for this reason. It's probably another reason that a dose or two may be difficult to transport for individuals.

Have never had a flu shot, and won't be getting one anytime soon. I had a shot of whiskey instead.

Rocmoc, I, too, hope your recovery is speedy. I guess, in the end, it's still a matter of 'luck of the draw' sometimes, isn't it? Not fair! Take care, and get well! Lee

karead.... the ultimate optimist!! You two take care, too!
