Hi-

A few years ago we started taking our male cat with us in our motor home. He quickly became a great traveler - when we were in motion he would move about the MH - ride on the bed and look out the window - or sit on DW's lap. He liked to sleep on the shelf above our heads in our B+. Once, he did slip off of the shelf and fall when we were makeing a sharp turn - but got back on it again.

We did not use our MH last year but this year we took him on 2 trips. As soon as we started to move he went into the bathroom and would not come out until we stopped moving. We keep the bathroom door open (with a box) because his litter box is in the bathtub.

All comments welcome.

We keep our cat in a carrier while we are traveling. I feel it is safer for the cat and us. In a confined area they are less frightened. It sounds like your cat is scared. I worry about things falling on it, or drawers opening and injuring it, so the cage works for us.

Our cat has been on the road with us for 2 years now. His behaviour from one day to the next is completely unpredictable. Some days he will sleep in one of the chairs while we travel. Sometimes he will travel in Marilyn's lap. About half of the time he heads under the couch as soon as the engine starts. Sometimes he comes out again while the engine is running - sometimes not. He tends to get accustomed to travel days, spending the 1st day under the couch and then getting braver as the successive travel days accumulate but not always. He also tends to come out more at night but again not always. I've seen him ride a couple hundred miles sitting on the dash looking out the front window and the next time I start the engine he bolts for under the couch.

He's a cat. Their brains are this big.

I think you will find they are governed by the phases to the moon. Mine will sometimes be on the dash, other times on the floor, in a corner in the back. He goes where he goes, does what he does. I will say, he is the first one in the RV on departure day. The first one at the door when it stops. Bill

If he has been acting more fearful or is just hiding more these days in general, you might want to have a vet look at him. Such changes in behavior are sometimes caused by not feeling so good (human people do this too). My cat showed such a behavior changes last Spring. We lost him to FeLV last week.

My cat is a seasoned traveler, but I let her decide whether or not to travel in her crate (I leave the door open) or roam around. I found that she likes a solid sided crate because there are days when she just doesn't feel social and will spend the entire trip in her "cave". Once we're at our destination she wants to explore and acts normally social. Cats are weird.

Cats are a "different breed" pet. Our BeBe tolerates the ride now. She either goes under the couch or heads into the bedroom to hide. Once we get where we are going, she comes out and is fine until time to leave again.

Hi Again -

Thanks to all for your replys. Here is more info - that I probably should have included in my original post. When we stop (for lunch or for the day) he comes out of the bathroom - walks around - checks things out - eats - drinks - uses the litter box - just like at home. Also, when we return to the MH after visiting some "attraction" he is usually looking out a window or asleep somewhere in the MH. But as soon as the MH starts to move he goes into the bathroom again. I know cats do their own "thing" and we will never know why - so we will take him with us and enjoy his company - hopefully for many more years

X2! Cats under the pedals are a bad thing-and having seen rvs on the interstate that have been hit and the remains look like a bomb hit them, I also worry about the cats getting slung out of the coach. A crate may not be much protection, but it's better than none at all.
