Great idea. Find System Restore and have the computer go back to a date where it was working. As mentioned, an automatic windows update might have caused an issue with firewalls or security settings. I would turn off all virus protection for a few minutes at least to see if that clears it up. But do try the Restore function. Simple and easy and you can revert right back.

Where I don't know Vista, and do not want to, I know on earlier versions of Windows you can choose to manually set the IP address of your client (Computer) I do this on occasion.
And if you have done so it can not connect to another network (other than the one it's set for) till you either go back to automatic, or properly re-set for that network.
page 2:
Linksys "Home/Small Office" routers ship with a 50 client limit. Now increasing the limit to 100 or 150 or even 250 is fairly easy. Howeever they ship with a 50 client limit.
One of the places I camp last July-4 weekend folks were complaining that they could connect but they were not connected (Limited or no connectivity Windows eXtra Painful said)
Sure enough, the client base was maxed and they were users 52, 53,54, 55 and so on. FOr me, since I know how to set manual IP on XP, not a problem. I finally logged into the router and upped it to 100
The next day.. the client base was maxed out
This happens because not just computers. but many Cell phones, (Including the overly popular I-phone) and PDA's and other devices will automatically connect to any open entwork near them.

Thanks guys, Yes, the Dell hekp desk did a system restore as moted in my previous post. On the Static IP, the campus netwrok admins looked at it and couldn't see why it wasn't connecting. It also won't connect at other hotspots in town like Starbucks and Panera, so likely not something with the campus network per se. My money is on the on/off switch, more details later.

If the WiFi was turned off with the switch you would not find this reported by you earlier... "Vista pops up the bubble that says "wireless networks in range" but it won't connect to any of them."

You could have a faulty board. See if you can borrow a usb wi-fi adaptor from someone and give that a try.

Bill, check this quote by fpresto:
fpresto wrote: Check the simplest things first. I had a similar thing to Relayman. My Dell has a slider switch on the side that disables the transmit side of the WiFi. It will see the networks but not connect. I felt pretty stupid after an hour of troubleshooting my network.
Probably "airplane mode" or similar where the TX is turned off but the RX is not. So you see the networks but can't connect to them...poor engineering if you ask me , but I don't design these things.....still waiting to hear from DD tonight so no update yet.

If you haven't already, reseat the wireless card and the 2 cables connected to it. It's usually under the keybd or bottom of laptop unless you have a card that pops into the side. If software/signal has been eliminated then the card or motherboard is defective.
