I guess this question goes out to the Ford F250 SD 6.0 PSD drivers or anyone who knows about them.
Recently while towing the rig on our last few trips, when starting off on a hill (with Tow Haul on), as it shifts into 2nd gear it seems to really go in hard with a jolt and shortly after that the engine seems to skip a beat as if it lost power or a cylinder went out for a second. It also makes a noise almost like a "SPIT". It also has happened when it down shifts into 2nd on a steep climb. This has happened three times now....each time on hills and only after a shift into 2nd gear. If I remember right, it's turning around 2,500 to 3,000 RPM at the time.
The confusing part is that it doesn't happen all the time on every hill and only when towing. There are no warning lights comming on and all the temperatures are normal. The truck is a 2005 and only has 23,000 miles on it.
I'm pulling a 27 foot 5th wheel that weighs about 8,500 lbs.
Before I go to Ford and listen to them tell me that they can't re- produce the problem, I thought I'd ask the real experts that actually drive one and maybe have some hands on experience with them.
Sorry that I don't have more info to give, but it just started happening. As you might guess, it does make me a little uneasy.
Many thanks in advance for any information and help with this...it will all be appreciated.

I would post the question on a Powerstroke forum, you may get more replies (dieselstop, powerstroke.org, powerstrokenation, etc.)

Your best answer will be to PM THIS MEMBER who was on the design team at Ford for that Tranny and trust what he says.

I had that happen on my 2006 a couple of times. Shifting hard like a dragster with a shift kit. I disconnected both batteries allowing the transmission to "lose" it's memory and everything went back to normal.

Hi Larry,
Thanks for the lead. Pretty new at this stuff here...not sure how to PM Mark. Can't find any email info to do this. Sounds like he sure knows the tranies for the truck though.

I agree with the above. The first step is disconnect the batteries and let the trans software relearn the transmission's characteristics. Sometimes the software learns itself into a hole that it can't find it's way out of.

If that doesn't fix it you may need a trans pro with the right tools to diagnose it.

Thanks Mark...I'll try that this weekend and see what happens next trip. How long would you suggest I leave the batteries disconnected for this process to finish?

A half hour would be enough time.

I don't understand why this truck is dropping in 2nd to pull a 8,500lb trailer up a hill?
The 6.0 is no slouch when it comes to power. Sure, it is connected to a 4 speed, but still?
8,500 is not that big of a trailer for the 6.0 diesel.

You might want to check out "if" your down on power. IMHO it is for some reason?
