My oldest daughter found a kitten about a month ago in the pole barn. We have been feeding it and treating it for the many problems, hoping for a good outcome. First it had skin abrasions all over its body. We treated those with peroxide and antibiotic ointment. I started it on a daily dose of antibiotic to prevent infection.

I have never seen a kitten with such thin skin. Regardless of the pain it was in, it purred. Everything caused a tear. 3 weeks ago I stitched a 3" gash up on its side. Removed the stitches after a week and the gash healed. Looked like the kitten was going to be fine. I had it on a balanced diet of kitten food, water, and some milk. Added some cod liver oil a couple weeks ago to help the skin.

Last night it developed a prolapsed rectum. We took it to the vet today. The vet said there was nothing they could do (too much bowel protrudng). We had the baby put to sleep.

My daughter is devastated. I can't help but wonder if I had taken the little thing to the vet four weeks ago if the outcome would still be the same. I have some animal training and did some prevet classes.
I cleaned the places on its skin and treated them. I stitched up the big ones. I gave it antibiotic for a couple weeks to prevent infection. It purred the whole time.

It was just a little stray. A little stray that stole everyone's heart.

I'm sorry for your daughter's broken heart and for yours... but at least the kitten had love and care all that time. Sometimes in spite of the best we can do, we can't save their lives... but we can love them while we try and that counts for a lot, really.

Oh gosh. You sure gave that kitten every opportunity -- just sounds like it was a fragile little thing to begin with.

Sorry your daughter is so hurt. I remember those early lessons of fragile life.

Take care.

Please don't second guess your self/decisions. The rest as Susan posted, I couldn't have said it any better.

I am sorry for the loss...You both showed the kitten the meaning of "Love" albeit for a short while.

Pops is right. You took good care of that kitten and gave it love and attention it would otherwise not have had in its short life. You're a good soul.

So sorry for your loss, At least you allowed the kitty to feel love and know someone cared. It sounds like the little one had more health problems, you did your best but sometimes you can`t save them.

Couldn't agree more. (I'm going to go give my cats a hug now!)

So sorry to hear about your poor little kitty; as previously said, at least it got a good dose of love & caring from your family in its little kitty life. There's only so much you can do sometimes.

So sad to read about your kitty. Sometimes, in spite of all we do, bad things happen. It wont help to think "what if", just know, that you and your family showed love and compassion to a kitten that may not have known any otherwise.
