The oven in my camper tends to get everything a little too hot on the bottom. I'd read somewhere that I could put a tile or baking stone on the bottom (above the burner) to help control the hotspots in the oven. However, when I did this, it broke my stone (Pampered Chef baking stone :-( ) right in half.
Did I use the wrong kind of stone? Should I just get an unglazed terracotta clay tile from Home Depot and use that? Any pointers would be appreciated!

gumbyjb, I use an airbake cookie sheet to keep things from burning in the RV oven. Just place on the oven rack and place whatever it is you are cooking on the cookie sheet.
An airbake cookie sheet doesn't weigh as much as a stone and they don't break either.

I have a pizza stone I bought from WalMart plus one of those cake cooling grates on top of that, that way, air circulates all around what ever you have baking. It seems to work pretty well, alot better than without anything.

Did you wash you baking stone, We have three baking stones, One a pampered Chef. Not sure why it would brake unless you washed it (not supposed to) and it had some moisture in it. The stones do help a lot and are great to bake on.

It doesn't matter if it is broken. Its purpose is simply to absorb heat to steady the temperatures. I think I had to break a pizza stone to get it to fit. Later I replaced it with an extra ceramic tile I had at home. It stays on the bottom shelf and is not actually used to cook on.

Mine got broken in half too (forgot and left it in the oven while driving thru the desert...ooops) I left it in there and it works just fine.

Ditto to what RidingFamily said. Our tile broke and it still works. I guess you should not leave it in the oven while traveling.

The terracotta is what is recommeneded, unglazed. They are 6x6 and you should not have to worry about breakage. I haven't done it yet still looking for a better price than 4-6 bucks each.

We use an ordinary floor tile and leave it in the oven to travel. Has not broken yet.

Leaving the stone in the oven while traveling created some bad wear marks on the enamel of my oven. Just a heads up.
