On Thursday afternoon I got a telephone call from Medic Alert. They left a message on my answering machine that there was a major problem with my file at Medic Alert. They asked me to call them back so they could go over the medical information they had on file. The phone number that they left was the same one on my Medic Alert necklace. I called them back. Asked what the problem was (I haven't had any changes to my meds) the lady proceeded to go thru what was in my file. I verified the information. She then said lets go over your wife's info. So I verified all of her information. At the end of the call the lady say we now need to renew our membership in Medic Alert. For $27.00 for 1 year or $50.00 for three years. That fee was each for my wife and myself. So now I have access to my medical records 24/7 for the next 365 days on my computer. Or if my Dr. Changes any of my meds or treatment my Cpap or anything else I call them on the phne and pay them $15.00 each time some thing changes.
Beware of this cold call way for Medic Alert to get a donation out of you.

Whats wrong with just writing down everything on a piece of paper and carrying that with you? Or, if you want to be high tech, then put everything on a thumb drive. $27 per year plus $15 for each change is a rip off.

It wouldn't BE a cold call if you are already a member. If you AREN'T a member why would you return their call? More importantly, how and from whom did they get your medical information?

Hmm, you learn something new every day on RV.net. We got Medic Alert necklaces for DS and DH, who both have serious medical histories. We just had the back of the thingy engraved with the most important info. DH keeps a copy of his current meds, past medical history, and all his doctors folded up in his wallet. Nobody to call, nobody has to keep up with the info, and its FREE. Sometimes I like the low-tech ways better.

Vial of Life is free and darned good to have. More than one EMT has thanked my wife for it as they took me to the ER.

I kind of wish we had a national data base available to medical personnel only. Most people don't need it, but some of us could use it.

PEA, are you ever on the 40 meter net around lunch time? I had my big beams taken down and I use a high quality G5RV wire for the moment. I have not figured out exactly what kind of HF antenna I want for the coach. I have a screwdriver antenna I might mount off of my ladder in the back. I also have a full set of Hustler coils, the Webster Band Spanner (showing my age there) and other mobile antennas. What do you use?

I got my 90 yr old mom a medic alert bracelet and she wouldn't wear it, said it was ugly, so I ordered another one with fancy glass beads. I couldn't put her diagnosis "Alzheimer's" on it as that is her biggest fear and she has no trouble reading, so it just says DNR on file, state of Calif. All of her medical info is in their records so if we were ever in an accident or something, the first responders would be able to quickly access it. But....I ran into the same problem as the OP of this thread. Trying to get OFF the phone after calling Medic Alert is like trying to get away from AT&T. After I paid a large fee for the two bracelets and "membership" they badgered me for a donation. Boy, have things changed. I remember when Medic Alert was quite reasonable and there were no annual fees, but those were the "olden days" of the 1960's and 70's.

You aren't just Whistling Dixie on that one. When I first got my Medic Alert Bracelet I think it was only $15.00 bucks, that was a one time fee for lifetime. I do remember that they charged you $10.00 bucks to make changes to your file add meds, conditions etc. etc.

Kinda makes you feel old doesn't it.
