We are getting a new vehicle for family car. Just the DW and me. DW likes the FJ cruiser, but can't really tow without disconnecting drivelines?? I don't see the sense in getting a 4wd that I can't tow it. We live in LA, no snow here. If we get a 4wd toad, we can take it to the desert and Death Valley. So I'm thinking the Jeep Wrangler 4wd auto in the same price range of $30k. Is it easy to tow it?

The Wrangler is very easy to tow. I personally wouldn't deal with disconnecting drive shafts. You might want to look at the Liberty as well. It would probably work well for the off-roading you will likely be doing and it's much cheaper.

Though the FJ might be a better quality vehicle than the Jeep, you can't tow it 4 down, as you mentioned. If that's a priority, then get the Jeep.
The Wrangler is a lot of fun to drive off road, too.

yep, get something meant to be towed 4 down from the start, not modified.

I would not buy a vehicle I did not like just because it can be towed 4 down with no mods. I tow an 04 Toyota Tacoma 4 door 4x4 because I love the vehicle. I put my bikes in the back and my kayaks on the rack an have lots of room and only 3,800 lbs. I did have to install a driveshaft disconnect but it is only a minor inconvenience to have the vehicle I want. I have towed mine thousands of miles with no problems.

We tow an FJ Cruiser 4 down. It requires a driveline disconnect and a fairly complicated set up procedure. In both mine and my husband's opinion, it's worth it, your mileage may vary.

No more premium fuel anymore you can use regular. Plus the mpg went up to 17-21 for the 4wd automatic. I bet if Toyota made them a towable, they'd sell many. Here's the news release.

The DW doesn't want to even see the Jeep Wrangler. No rear passenger air bags and even worse MPG.
So we will be test driving the FJ cruiser tomorrow and I have to drive about 25 miles so she can just take a look at one with the new army green color. It replaced the VooDoo Blue. Green's her favorite color. If we get one, it ain't going to be green. I want the silver.
Let's see who wins????

I'm with JnJnKatiebug on this one. Tow what you enjoy driving. The Mod is easy for a Toyota and it works great.
My previous toad was a Jeep Liberty, great off road, and that's where I should have left it. On the highway it was a piece of junk. Wind noise, cupping tires every 1000 miles, cheap brakes, but it was towable "as is" After the Jeep, never again. This time we bought what we wanted to drive and couldn't be happier. I have ground clearance to go off road trout fishing, and the comfort ride of the wife's Lexus for long sight seeing trips.
Not all 4X4's are created equal, tow what you want to drive, it will be money well spent.

I agree with the Wrangler being easy to tow.
We have a 09 4 dr. Wrangler that we tow behind our Class C and it does very well.

Curious as to where in the San Fernando you are.
Being as Im just over the hill, maybe meet and you could take a look at the setup on mine and deceide it its what your looking for.
