I went to Petco to pick up some supplies yesterday and they were having an "adoption" day. My MIL was with me and fell in love with a little 10 mo. old pug. She was very sweet. When we asked what the adoption fee was, we were told $350 The woman quickly told us that the fee included the spaying that had already taken place and microchipping.

Isn't that high? I would think that if you are trying to adopt out pets, the "adoption" fee would be "affordable".

Was the adoption process run by a local animal rescue organization or was it being run by Petco?

No matter $350 is a high fee to adopt (which makes me think Petco owns the pets)...most rescue organizations will charge a nominal fee of ~ $100 or less to adopt...

I am against "impulse" adopting.
Go the the store or something else, see a cute puppy and bring it home...bad idea.

Adopting a pet should be a planned event...not a spur of the moment notion.

(pugs, from a reputable breeder with good blood lines are expensive)
Don't know the situation with Petco???

"normally" Petco has "adoption organizations" in the stores to promote adoptions, Petco does not rum the adoption process, they just provide the space for whatever group to use.
I am a volunteer with Greyhound Rescue, Inc of Gerrardstown, WV and we do "meet n greets" in both Petco & PetSmart, none of our hounds are housed at either store, they just provide us space to bring in our dogs so people can meet them, spend time with them and ask questions. Sometimes we might have an available hound with us, but lots of times we just have our personal dogs with us. Our adoption fee is $250.00, and if adopted thru PetSmart, then you will be sent some pretty good money saving coupons, etc. from PetSmart, not sure about Petco as I don't do the meet n greet there. But, even though 350 sounds high, make a few phone calls and you'd be amazed at what vets are charging nowdays. For me, when the time comes, I will rescue another greyhound as I love my low maintenance, lazy couch potato (naps about 20 - 22 hours per day)

Lot of nice dogs at your local animal shelter for 1/3 that cost. Keep checking back if you don't see one you like the first time.

Most rescue groups I've talked to, (small dogs) the fee is at least $250. Not what I can afford.

When we adopted Daisy we paid $300 from a rescue group that had there pets at Petsmart. After puppy classes we could get $50 back, but decided not to after taking the puppy classes. Misty was $200 from our local humane society.

That sounds way too high. My oldest DD adopted a 7 or 8 mo. old red bone black mouth cur mix from Stray Rescue in St. Louis for $100 and he was neutered and microchiped before she got him.

Some of the dogs even from the Humane Society are adopted out at higher prices because they are sold by breeders at high prices. Our son and DIL got an English Bulldog from the HS and paid $350 for him. Adoptive parents will pay higher prices for certain breeds, so the HS charges them. These fees will go to help support the breeds that don't get adopted quite so easily, and will have lower fees charged for them to help them get homes.

It's like anything else, demand for certain breeds controls prices even at shelters. If it helps the others, why not?

Anywhere from $200.00 to $400.00 is about typical for rescue groups these days, much of the pricing depends upon how the rescue group is funded, i.e. private donations, local non-profit, national breed rescue organization, etc. Considering the costs for vetting these days, which includes vaccinations, blood panels, fecal exam/testing, heart worm tests, micro chipping, spay/neuter, etc. around $350.00 doesn't seem that high.

Shelters are sometimes less expensive because they are also funded by local or state government, private donations, and national organizations such as SPCA, Humane Society, etc. So if a person is on a tighter budget there are wonderful pets available at the shelter, too.

I guess it depends on who has the dog or cat a person is interested in, the overall health of the animal, etc. as to what would be considered expensive or a bargain.

When the rescue group I volunteer with has animal adoption days at Petco or Petsmart on the weekend we rarely allow an adopter to take the animal home "on the spot"... unless of course the person or family is someone who has adopted with us previously or one of us knows them personally. We wait and process the paperwork the first of the week, calling their vet's office or personal reference, making sure they are allowed to have a pet if they are renting/leasing their home, etc. By waiting, this helps ensure the person or family adopting didn't make a "I got caught up in the moment and fell in love with that cute face" decision. After all the goal is to find permanent/forever homes for the pets.

As always, thanks for adopting a rescued animal!!

On edit : spelling corrections.
