Hi Everyone,
My husband and I are having a disagreement on whether we should let our son play video game while on a weekend trip. I think It is ok at night when you can't sleep or during a long drive. But during the day the kids should be outside playing or maybe playing board games that everyone can do together. He said to let him be with his friend and let them play the video games all day in the RV. What is your opinion?
Thanks
Jeanine

We just traded our 32 foot 5th wheel for a 19 foot Rockwood Roo. That was one of the reasons our little guys were spending way to much time in the camper with video's and such. So now when we go Camping its more like Cammping as there just isn't enough room for all the stuff we used to carry. The kids will just have to tough it out with there bikes or swiming or fishing.....it will be hard but hey life is Tough. If I were you I would leave the video games at home.

Hi We allow our son to bring his game system and movies BUT they are only to be used in case of bad weather. However most of the time he doesn't even play it, sometimes he'll try to watch a movie after dark when he and (if his buddies come) aka boys weekends but after being on the run fishing and playing they are usally wiped out and asleep so it goes unused. LOL But we have been lucky with the weather while camping and havn't been dealt with alot of rain. Happy Trails

I would vote no video games in the camper. None. Camping is about getting out and doing things you cannot do at home. Kids should be outside, playing and riding bikes and getting filthy. A chance to get out in the sunshine and fresh air.

Video games on the road on the way? Still a no for me. We tried DVD headrest players for a bit for movies, but didn't like "loosing" our kids while on the road. They just zoned out and didn't talk. We'd rather that we all talk as a family about the cool things we're driving by. And when we're desperate, we have kids books on CD that everybody listens to while looking out the windows.

Of course, this is coming from a family of 5 who have NO video games whatsoever, and will not ever have them. My husband and I grew up without them, and we are striving for our children to have as technological free upbringing as we did.

My boys play vids and games in the AM and sometimes later at night. During the day, it is my job to keep them busy with adventures and stuff.

We bring it along and they can play when and if they want to. Mostly they find other things to do, or we're sight seeing. When they do play, it's fun to see them play together, having a good time. When we're at home, they treat each other as if they have cooties or something. The teenager (15) wants nothing to do with her pesky booger of a little brother (11).

Same here.

This is the way I see it -- when I'm in the RV I'm on vacation, and I want to pass any spare time doing things that I enjoy and find relaxing. For me that's mostly reading. I would NOT be relaxed or a happy camper if someone arbitrarily told me I couldn't read while on vacation because they thought I should be out hiking or biking or watching the grass grow. IMO kids deserve the same respect.

Now, having said that -- we aren't the type to just go to a campground to be going to a campground. When we go somewhere, it's to see the sights or do specific activities in that area. So we're rarely in/at the RV for any length of time except at night. I might feel differently if we just hung out at a campground for days at a time. But we'd all find that so boring I suspect DH and I would be joining in the video games.

I have never restricted screen time. Doing so just seems to make them crave it more. Let 'em play it if they want, they'll likely get bored and go find something else to do. I guess I don't get the mindset that camping is about being outside doing stuff - don't they do that at home? Mine always did. The kids are on vacation too, let them relax the way they want to.

Ok. I just read this one to my 14yo son and this was HIS reply:

He said it was okay to bring the game system along, but NOT okay to be playing it all day long! He said it is much better to be out riding bikes or doing "stuff"! In the evenings or when it is gross outside, it's ok to play then.

Straight from the horse's mouth!

But I do have to say my kid did set up his RockBand game outside during a party and it was a huge hit with kids and adults alike! All things in moderation I guess!

If it is raining I am OK with games that do not make any noise. If the weather is nice there should be better things to do.
