It was a pocket knife with a fork and spoon. School districts have become very stupid about this. In order to avoid any show of racial or other preference they just kick everyone out, without looking at individual cases. Many youth are having their lives destroyed by the policy.

Our son did the same thing back in 2nd grade. He was suspended for 3 days. The principle said if he had opened the knife, he would have been expelled. Some of the highly educated school boards needs to get a brain.

My wife & I are both retired teachers and are appalled at the stupidity in such actions. A while back a kindergarten boy got in trouble for kissing a kindergarten girl. Also gross stupidity. It's all about CYA. And to h**l with common sense.

At Omaha Public Schools an elementary school girl was expelled for bringing a plastic butter knife to school to cut her food. I believe it was in Oregon that an elementary school boy was expelled for drawing a picture of a gun (a stick man with a stick gun). Lunacy! And Then there's the the New Jersey school that has 2d graders singing praises to Obama using well known Christian and Patriotic melodies.

My son was threatened with expulsion for having a water gun one day. The rule on weapons included facsimile's of a gun. I got it fixed after pointing out the stupidity of the rule. Later that same school year teachers were squirting students with water guns themselves and that was OK. I have a high respect for most teachers but I have none for school administrators and the so called "proffessional" education experts.

The school is in a lose lose situation, I do not blame the school in this situation, they have a rule and they have to follow it, if they do not and something bad happens next week with another student doing the same thing then they lose as well.

The parents should have known with as much as he uses this that he may take it to school as the child does not realize what can happen but the parents do. I think the punishment is overboard but one cannot blame the school for following a rule desinged to protect children.

Again I do think this is overboard as far as punishment goes but they either need to change the rule or follow the punishment, they cannot pick and choose who gets punished and who does not. This is a matter of what could happen not what did happen.
