Is the far west end of Mission to far for a trolley pickup?

Maybe we'll just have to settle for Granny's Burger for Eight. Which would equal about 3.5 Gonzales Burgers

GGG will probably need to start it's own trolley.

If you go through Corpus Christi be sure to stop and take a tour of the USS Enterprise, one huge Carrier with a pretty good history. The majority of her is open for touring.

Do you mean the USS Lexington, the aircraft carrier? Great self guided tour & great old airplanes too.

Wasn't the enterprise from Star Wars or Star Trek or one of those shows or maybe it is in Corpus Christi & I am not aware???

Sometime in around mid November (2008 it was Nov 22)the King Ranch has a cowhand breakfast and tours of the ranch. We went last year and enjoyed it. Look up the info on line, it is about 120 miles north from mission on rt 141 in Kingsville.

Los Ebanos hand drawn toll ferry about 12 mi west of Mission is an interesting sight. It only takes a few minutes to cross, you don't even have to get off. Pay the return toll to the attendent on board. The ferry will hold 3 vehicles and many walkons.

Rio Grande River cruise is very enjoyable, 1 or 2 hours in length. It leaves from the Riverside restaurant, check with them as times vary.

pawatt, You are correct, it is the Lexington. The Enterprise is one that a few of my buddies served on during Nam. She also was one that hit Iraq in 1996. Guess I'm getting senile.

It's the USS Lexington that's docked in Corpus...However, there is an aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise that is still in commission and active. My cousin is an Air Squardron Commander aboard the Enterprise.

I CERTAINLY agree with Don P about Gonzales Burgers. Only place I've ever eaten where they grind the meat JUST as it's thrown on the grill.

Another great way to spend a day, if you enjoy nature is the Atacosa Wildlife Refuge. It is a great place for day hiking, and wildlife viewing of many kinds such as Gators, shore birds, deer, coyote, ocelot, road runner, and many others. Take the 12 mile bay view drive along the Lugana Madre and enjoy great views of South Padre from the mainland side.

Take Texas 100 east toward South Padre Island and turn North at Lagona Vista and follow signs. Not sure WHEN they open but closing time is usually 6:00 PM. Guided tram tours are also available.

Can you bicycle thru the Atacosa Wildlife Refuge?

Eh!

I had the good fortune to visit the USS Lexington this past June while camping in Corpus Christi.

WOW!

It is a WWII "ESSEX" Class carrier of which many were built and commissioned during the war. At the time it was the largest and most modern of the US Navy warships. Only the great "IOWA" class battleships of the period came close in size and fire power.

What made this visit so special for me is that in 1967, 1968, and 1969 I served in the ship's company of a similar aircraft carrier, the ESSEX class USS Bennington, CV-20, stationed out of Long Beach California. Being able to walk around the Lex. in self guided tours brought back many memories.

I was even able to visit the main engine room where on the Bennington I had stood so many hours of duty. Back then, we would be assigned to 6 hours on duty (manning a watch station such as throttles) and 6 hours off duty (to eat, sleep, shower, etc) around the clock for as many as 40 days in a row. Then we would come into port for three or four days, of which we had to work all but one, then back to sea where it would start all over again.

The Lex support group has done an excellent job restoring maintaining, and presenting this ship as a museum. The cavernous hanger deck is full of displays and interactive exhibits and the flight deck has both actual and re-constructed aircraft. I would recommend a visit to anyone.

I started with nothing... and have most of it left.
