it's a labor of love. When it's done you'll have a trailer that you can be proud of. Good luck!

You have a lot more faith in sawhorses than I do!

You have adventure ahead!

Do visit Airforums as said and also view the "Area63"' webpage. Area 63 is a place where vintage Airstreams get remade into astounding and elegant trailers. It might give you some ideas.

The young lady holding her head is my youngest daughter and I think shes shielding her eyes against the evening sun. So far as the neighbors are concerned we were pleased to be able to just squeeze the shell into the garage. It cleared by half an inch. As this picture illustrates we call it shell on rollerskates.

After the shell came off I began the process of stripping the deck. A PO had scabbed on 5/8 ply with galvanized nails and then covered that with Pergo. I had a small mountain of debris which included relocating some huge carpenter ant condos.

Then began the process of rehabilitating the frame. I've seen worse in pictures but several of the ourriggers were just rust held together with more rust and the stringer that had been under the blacktank was gone gone gone. With a variety of weapons, the dirtiest job I've ever undertaken was accomplished.

The metal has been repaired, the whole thing has been cleaned to bare metal and painted in rust converter, primed and painted. We've ordered holding tanks as we're adding a grey tank and relocating the bath to the center and will go with an above deck wet-bath black tank. If the timeline demonstrated by people more talented than I am is any indication it'll be two years before its really done.

There is one thing you should be aware of. Vintage Airstreams do not do well with very still truck suspensions. They were designed to be towed by sedans. That dually of yours will beat your A/S pretty hard.

You'll see the effects in popped rivets, interior furniture seperation and A frame bending. Consider an air hitch.

Using an array of tools, some of which are depicted in the next picture, the frame ended up looking pretty good. The most effective tool did not end up in the picture. I think because I was using it. There is a wire brush attachment for a grinder that some call a bear claw. Its a series of twisted knots of heavy wire and really does a number on heavy rust. Of course, the crud goes everywhere.

The next step involves determining where the bath will go and how to position the fresh water, grey and black/shower pan combo. The tanks are relatively expensive and are not returnable, so we wanted to be certain we got it right the first time. The next pictures reflect the bath vanity, shower pan and black tank location, all to scale. One step at a time, it comes together.

Wow... it's looking like a big project! Looks like you're off to a good start, though!

I'm working on a '69 Holiday Rambler myself; I get to replace the roof joists now after I found a leak... not looking forward to that one.

Good luck with the rest of it!

Very cool project!

Nothing better than watching a DIY of this scale from the sidelines! Can't wait to see more pic's with your progress.
