I say go for it. I'm 47 and my wife is 46. We are in the first stages of getting ready to retire. Already getting rid of "stuff" and just got a Home inspection and plan to get the house on the market by Apr.But DW is not so sure about leaving the "False" safety of the harbor. So, we are taking baby steps. get rid of stuff, get rid of house, move into a apartment "to money up". Then start living. I figure we to will be casting the bow lines off in 2011 also and leaving the "known" life style of either working or getting ready to go to work. All I can say is you have the right idea. You only live once. There are no "do overs" in life. GO FOR IT!!!

Just curious how you're going to support yourself. Kinda young to have a pension. Inheritance? Not really any of our business, but curiosity is a major human trait....

I'm 27, been FT for 5 months now. Apparently we're the young whippersnappers around here. Retirement is a long way off, though, and our kids aren't in school yet, so we've got a little window of opportunity to roam the country for a few years before we settle down.
If you're going to be in major metro areas with museums and science centers, you might look at the ASTC passport program: http://www.astc.org/members/passlist.htm We signed up with our local museum for $150/year, and have already visited 20+ museums in the past five months. Our unofficial goal is to hit all of the museums on their list.
