Hi all,
I am looking to buy a youth quad for my 8 year old daughter sometime before next spring. she has only ridden a little chinese 50cc two times, and likes it, but it is just too small for her. (She is very tall for her age).
I am not very familiar with many of the youth quads, and would like some suggestions from the more experienced crowd.
I would like to stay with a (used),reliable brand, preferrably not chinese, and it MUST be a GREEN sticker quad. I would strongly prefer a 4 stroke, and would like a auto clutch, or fully auto. Electric start would be nice, but not essential.
I like the looks of the Honda trx90, but have not actually seen one up close, so not real sure it is physically big enough for her.
so What say you? Can you guys give me your suggestions for youth quads to look at? your experience, opinions?

hi ron ,we have the yamaha breeze/grizzly both are great quads full auto ,with reverse ,i am in north oc if you would like to sit on one and ck it out, plus room to grow with throttle limiter

Only two come to mind: The Suzuki LT90 and the Yamaha Raptor 90. (sporty models) The Honda is physically the largest of the three. Eight is a tough age. When our GS was eight he was almost too big for a any of the 90cc units out there. The Yamaha Breeze and the LT80 (2 stroke) was already discontinued and he did not care for a utility like the 125 Grizzly. We have had a few Polaris 50/90cc units in the family and they held up okay. I would by a new Kymco 90 or 150cc before I would by a used Polaris 90.
He ended up with a LTZ 250 with the throttle set to 30 mph. (I had his last 50 doing 24 mph) The Honda 90 is a fine machine, we considered it but he would have out grown it in a year, two tops.
If you go the utility route you will have more choices.

I have an Eton 90 for my 8 year old. Eton also makes a nice 150 cc quad that is perfect for the in between years.
Eton is made in Taiwan. It is NOT chincese made. I have found GREAT aftermarket parts support for Eton. I mail order everything from Anything ATV in Iowa.
Parts for Eton are MUCH cheaper than parts for the big four. I have a Suzuki LTZ50 as well. I love the Japanese stuff. But, the Eton is a nice choice as well.

We've had two Etons, both Viper 90's, no problems at all. Sold one this last spring and replaced with a Honda 250EX for my oldest boy. Given the need, I'd buy one again. However, FYI, they are are two strokes.

My sons were raised on our LT80, in fact i loved riding it too!!!
Injected 2 stroke auto, never had a problem with it. Like the energizer bunny it kept going and going....One of the best quads i ever bought.

Our youngest (7yrs old) is on the trx90....wouldn't have him on anything else. It has a green sticker (the 4stroke meets California emissions) He started on it (from a 50) two years ago (we gave him 2nd gear then added another gear as his skills improved) and now shifts through the gears, rides in the dunes and jumps like there's no tomorrow. It's been an awesome bike. And...most importantly, it's holding up to the hard riding it gets in the sand.
Stay away from the Raptor 80. It couldn't keep up with our oldest. He blew it up and the stator had problem after problem.
Any of the 2strokes will have a red sticker.

My two sons both went from a 50 to the TRX 90, and they are great bikes. Good power, handling, and VERY reliable. They both loved it and learned how to shift on it. 3rd gear will get them to the top of the highest dunes in Glamis (without going straight up the walls of course). The other one that I see doing well in the dunes is the Polaris 90 2 stroke, but it is automatic (I think the new one is 4stroke now). If she is not too aggressive, the TRX90 will last a few years. It sounds like she may not be ready for something bigger yet. My son outgrew the TRX90 at 7-8, only because his riding level was high. Otherwise, an 8 year old fits it great as far as size. Ours was a 2005, with only a pull start. It starts every time, but the kids cant start it. I would look for a newer one with electric start!

We had a 2 stroke Eton Viper 90 and Polaris Sportsman 90. Both were decent ATVs. The Polaris is a big larger ATV though and a child could ride it longer as they get bigger. The Eton is just a bit smaller. Both had their stators replaced, the Polaris a couple of times. Both had reverse, the Eton was an electric reverse the Polaris manual. Put paddles on both of them and they did fine in the dunes. Fit & finish of the Eton was great as was the Polaris.

Have you thought about teaching her to ride a 2-wheeler (dirtbike). Safer than a quad, when you fall your bike won't land on top of you!
