RE: Is this a good invertor?

I'd pass on it. It is not a name brand, and seriously lacking in specifications. No mention of sine wave or MSW, and only peak power is specified.
I have a Xantrex pure sinewave inverter. Sine wave is best because there in no doubt it will safely power anything you connect to it.

RE: Suspension questions

I had a 1988 Winnie on a John Deere chassis. If I ever had too much air in the front tires or too little weight over the front axle it became impossible to steer straight.

RE: So. Cal Interstates

Whichever one gets fewer big rigs might be slightly smoother. California interstates are badly torn up by big rigs and the damage is only patched, not repaired. Expect a bumpy ride.

RE: Running LP heat on batteries...

azloafer doesn't mention the make/model/year of the RV, but if the rig is budget priced or older, the converter/charger is pretty worthless for charging a seriously drained battery from the generator. It might take upwards of two days running to fully charge the batteries. Look into getting a modern three-stage smart charger, preferably one where you can override the float charge mode for a fast charge with the generator running.

RE: Running LP heat on batteries...

If the batteries are healthy and you minimize use of lights and other power users, you SHOULD make it through the night. It also pays to set the thermostat a little lower and use blankets.
The LP furnace does use a lot of 12 volt power, and may drain the batteries to the point where the furnace won't light. It will just blow cold air and continue to drain the batteries without creating any heat. Watch for this (the furnace on for a long time, check the vents for heat), and in the worst case bundle up until you can start the generator or engine. You may be unable to start the generator without first starting the engine if the batteries are really drained.

RE: welding frame over batteries to prevent theft

I'd remove the batteries before welding. AGMs are not supposed to vent hydrogen gas under normal conditions, but it's not worth the risk. I like the idea of a padlocked bar instead.

RE: fluorscent lights

Hi tomlang,
When did you do that research? There is now an led out there that does 430 lumens @ 0.180 of an amp.
430 lumens
That was a year ago, and LEDs are constantly gaining in efficiency (and thinlites are not)

RE: finding correct diesel pump at truck stops

get a pacific pride / cfn or whatever account is available where you live. They are commercial cardlock stations, no lines, one bill at the end of the month, and have locations in just about every little town you could imagine.
Where do you get this card you speak of, sounds like it would be handy if fuel price is right.
I have a Pacific Pride account from Pioneer Fuel.
http://www.pioneerfuel.com/
They are RV-friendly and they email prices in the western states on a weekly basis. I originally had an account from my nearest Pacific Pride franchise, but it was too difficult to compare prices with the other stations, so I switched.

RE: fluorscent lights

I had my thinlite porch light go out and replaced the tubes, then the ballast, in order to get it working. I bought the tubes and ballast on eBay and saved about half the cost of a new light.
I also considered replacing the guts with LEDs. However, I did some research, and found that LEDs and fluorescents were about equally power efficient for the same light output.

RE: Question for anyone who has sold RV on Craigslist

I'm selling a car on Craigslist right now. Each inquiry comes via Craigslist with this warning attached:
** CRAIGSLIST ADVISORY --- AVOID SCAMS BY DEALING LOCALLY
** Avoid: wiring money, cross-border deals, work-at-home
** Beware: cashier checks, money orders, escrow, shipping
** More Info: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.html

RE: Question for anyone who has sold RV on Craigslist

Mine was only $6K, cash.
Any other form of paper can bounce.
if its a certified or cashier's check they are guaranteed, can't bounce these unless the bank goes bankrupt faster than you can blink.
Counterfeit bounces, and it can be days after you get the "OK" from your bank.

RE: Small Solar Charger - For earthquake kit

Whenever we have an earthquake, cell service becomes very spotty at best for a few hours. The towers are not down, just overloaded. Same problem with outgoing landlines except for pay phones, but incoming landline calls from out of the area usually work. I've experienced this first hand a number of times here in Los Angeles.

RE: Small Solar Charger - For earthquake kit

There are all sorts of them on eBay, but I have no personal experience. You might consider one that also recharges AA NiMh batteries and get an LED flashlight that uses AA cells to toss into the kit. If you get rechargeable AA's, find the pre-charged ones since they hold their charge almost as long as alkaline cells. I also have an LED flashlight that uses lithium CR123 batteries as these have an incredible shelf life.
By the way, I also have a box I bought on eBay that holds four AA batteries and uses these to charge my cellphone, but watch out for compatibility. My HTC smartphone will use any USB charger but my wife's Razor will only use Motorola-compatible chargers.

RE: house batteries

We'll need additional information. What make and model of converter (or is it a converter/charger), voltages measured at the fuses and at the battery terminals both with and without short power, do 12 volt lights work with/without shore power. presence or absence of 120vac at the converter/charger input terminals or plug, try flipping the circuit breaker off and on.

RE: Starting your engine, while plugged into shore power

Each manufacturer appears to have it's own theory.
On my 2003 Foretravel (diesel), the owner's manual lets you operate the slide with or without the engine running, but it really wants to be level before the slide will budge. The slide is powered by the massive bank of house batteries, which can easily handle the task without shore or generator or engine power. But if boondocking, I'd rather start the evening with the batteries fully charged. So I turn off the engine after extending the slide.

RE: Titanium by Glendale

If I were into trailers instead of motorhomes, I would seriously consider this brand. I spent some time checking them out at an RV show a couple of years ago, and was impressed by the construction, insulation, unique cab-over design that gives you a lot more space within a given length, and superior brakes. I wouldn't be concerned about the company being out of business since no original warranty would apply and all the sub-systems are still available.
