RE: Thougths/opinions on this tent?

Look into the Columbia Cougar Flats Tent. I love mine.

RE: Help me decide on a place to go camping 3/8-3/10.

Niks, if you haven't been to Hunting Island SP it is great. We also really liked Skidaway Island SP near Savannah and want to check out Fort McAlister SP which is in that area (have heard really good things about it). I would think Paris Mtn will still be pretty cold at night. We have never been to Little Talbot Island, but have been very impressed with all the Florida SP's. We did Manatee Springs SP a few years ago. It was very natural and very neat to see the manatees in the springs. There are other Florida SP with springs that are visited by manatees this time of year. Just check out the website. Happy Planning, and let us know what you decide. We love Hunting Island State Park, but stay there almost every summer. We also just stay at River's End in August and checked out Savannah, so I'd rather not head their this soon. I too am worried about how cold Paris Mtn will be this time of year, further south is definitely the way to go. I had hoped to get to Smokemont this winter for some winter camping but it didn't happen. Manatee Springs was actually one of the first campgrounds I checked for availability, but it is full. I have read good reviews about Florida State Parks, and Little Talbot seems like a great place. Right now Stephen Foster SP in Georgia and Little Talbot in Florida are at the top of my list. Only thing keeping me from saying a definite yes to Stephen Foster SP, is that I am finishing up my BS in Biology next Spring, and we are taking a research trip to the Oke swamp then, so I don't really want to do the same thing two years in a row.

RE: Help me decide on a place to go camping 3/8-3/10.

Stephen Foster SP in S Georgia. Canoe, boat rental or swamp tours as well as hiking trails. My son and I and 4 friends did a 4 day canoe through the swamp the first week in March about 23 years ago. Thirty plus miles. Gators were just getting active, no bugs and the weather was great. Wish I could do that trip again That looks like a great place. Definitely considering this one, thanks!

RE: Help me decide on a place to go camping 3/8-3/10.

Gary- Great suggestion. I really like James Island County Park. However, I have family right down the road on Camp Road, so it is difficult to talk my better half into tent camping so close to a comfortable, free bed. Eycom- That looks like a beautiful state park and is now on my list of possible places to venture to in a few weeks. Hopefully the weather will get a bit warmer for us to head that way. Thanks for the link! Weathershak- I'm hoping to get to the Outer Banks later in the year. but I have been considering it for this trip. Goforjoe- Another nice suggestion. Pensacola might be a bit to far for just two nights, it is a 9 hour trip according to google. While looking through your suggestion I did stumble upon this Little Talbot Island. Has anyone ever been to Little Talbot Island? Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks everyone!

Help me decide on a place to go camping 3/8-3/10.

Well, I just found I will have a few days free and would like to go out for the first camping trip of the year. However, I have no clue where we should go. So help me decide. Here is a list of possible stipulations: We tent camp, so temperature is a factor. Where is having weather that is having temps stay above 50 at night? (or as close to 50 as possible) The cold won't kill us, but I don't want to be freezing. We tent camp a lot so we will be prepared for anything, however. We would like a campground with plenty of walking areas. Hiking trails, nice beach, or nature walks, etc. The more nature, the better. Within driving distance of a nice town or city for possible day visit would be nice as well. I live in Aiken, SC, so I'd like to keep it within a six hour drive, so mid to upper Florida, any here in Georgia, North Carolina, or South Carolina would be good. Might be some places in Alabama, Tennessee or Virginia would be good. Somewhere new (to us) and off the beaten path would be nice, so post up any suggestions! Oh, btw, it is almost too late for reservations, so does such a place exist that is not booked up?

RE: Touring the Smoky Mountains

Lots of great information. After looking into some of this I realized we had been to Cades Cove years ago. We didn't see so much as a bird as far as wild life goes but it was a nice drive. Is that normal? Hiking is out so we will be sticking to drive site seeing and easy walks Thanks vanman250 When we were in Cades Cove last year for two nights we saw 19 bears, as well as countless deer and turkeys. We saw beers every time we did the loop road, but you have to be looking pretty hard and driving real slow sometimes.

RE: New Tent Ordered

I almost bought the same tent a couple months ago. I ended up getting the Columbia Cougar Flats II, which is similar sized, and was cheaper at the time. I'm sure the Eureka will be a blast to camp in. As for a camp stove, I also use the coleman 2-burner model. We rarely use it however, because we cook most of the stuff on the grill, which we use charcoal for.

RE: Best time and place to snorkel in the Florida Keys?

If you are wanting to snorkel from your campsite, Long Key and Bahia Honda are best. At BH get a tent site on the NE area for better water access That is one of the plans, so we will be looking into one of those two campgrounds. Thanks!

RE: Best time and place to snorkel in the Florida Keys?

I think, if this gets to be the trip we go on, we will plan for March. This sounds about perfect for our schedules. I hate to wait that long to go camping again, so maybe a trip to the mountains is in order for this winter.

RE: Best time and place to snorkel in the Florida Keys?

When is the water warm enough? I'm ashamed to say I've never been. The earliest we could make it this year is early December, but I'm thinking March might be better.

Best time and place to snorkel in the Florida Keys?

I would like to tent camp at one of the campgrounds in the Florida Keys and do some snorkeling. I don't have a wet suit or anything like that. I'd like the water temperatures to be around 80 degrees if possible. I have heard there are times with the brown seaweed is real bad, and would like to avoid that. Anyone have any tips or suggestions? Nothing like first hand experience! Nik

I never have cell service at Hunting Island. I have t-mobile, btw.

RE: keeping food cold

We have one big cooler we use for our food. The ice usually lasts for 3-4 days. It is a coleman extreme. We also have a smaller cooler that we keep our beverages in. We normally restock it with ice every couple of days. Both coolers work just fine for weekend trips without having to restock with ice.

RE: Campground Suggestions Request

Hunting Island SP in SC is nice. If you feel like visiting Tybee Island in GA, River's End is probably not very busy this time of year. If your coming through I-20 in SC, Hamilton Branch SP is very nice and secluded. It is only about 30 minutes off the interstate. If your a golfer, Hickory Knob SP is not far from Hamilton Branch and has a nice golf course and a pretty decent campground, though the sites are as nice as Hamilton Branch. Myrtle Beach SP isn't bad either and you'll have more than your fill of things to do there. We were just in Myrtle Beach this past weekend. The weather is perfect for walking up and down the beach. You could still get in the water as well. The water was warm but if the wind was blowing hard, it was a bit chilly. Since your in a 4x4, check out some of the beaches on the OBX. You can drive your truck up on to them and cruise around.
