RE: Daylight savings time yea or nay

If elected King of America, I promise to solve the "Time" problem.. It's easy... every person in America would get up one hour before sunrise and start working as soon as it's light enough to see.... They would work until it's too dark to see.... then they would go to bed one hour after that ... This would save energy because there would be no need for lights, televisions, radios, movies, computers.... etc... Every person would work 363 days per year with ... one day per year off to do as they wish... and one sick day per year.... No exceptions ... no excuses... Now, see how simple that would be ... ? The Time problem is solved..... :B John

RE: No more paper receipts

Everybody is different each of us have our own thoughts on this subject.. As for me, .... if I cannot get a "Hard Copy" receipt/statement... I will not buy something or pay a bill ... The waitress at the local Nugget Restaurant got upset when I demanded a receipt for the meal I just paid for... the register had run out of paper and did not print a receipt... and I told her she had to write out a hand written receipt.. I demand a paper receipt for everything... from buying a soda at McDonald's to gasoline at the service station...and the receipts/statements must show the item purchased, the amount and the date purchased.. and I keep every receipt for ten years... I will not accept an "Electronic" receipt... it must be a physical paper receipt/statement that I can hold in my hand when I pay the bill or buy something... Example... phone bills, insurance bills, rent payments, car payments, buying gasoline, restautants, grocery stores,...etc...etc... if they want my business, they better give me a hard copy paper bill/statement and receipt.. Computers are toys and great for having fun... but in my opinion, only a very foolish person trust a computer with their financial and other personal information... I can go back ten years and show every single penny I spent with the date, item and amount .... Like I say... each person is different.. and this is the way I do things... But feel free to live your life the way you want to....after all this is America... John

Marvin Ballard 1931-2010

This past December 9,2009 my friend Marvin Ballard celebrated his 79th birthday ... and was feeling good... no pains, no sluggishness or tired feeling... We were laughing and joking.. That evening he went to the restroom to pee and it came out full of blood. Went to doctor next day... many tests and X-rays .... the doctor told us that all of his internal organs were eat up with an extremely fast growing cancer and there was no hope.. and Marvin only had a few weeks at best.. long story short..... less than six weeks later he was dead from cancer... January 3, 2010 The day he died, I received a frantic phone call early in the morning from him asking me to come quick because he needed me to help him get out of bed and go to bathroom... he was too weak to do it by himself... About 11:00 he started having problems breathing, so I called the rescue squad who came and carried him to the emergency room... As they were wheeling him out on the gurney, I told him to call me when they got through with his treatment and I would come get him. After about three hours, he had still not called .. so I called the hospital to see if he was ready to come home and the nurse said... "I'm sorry but Mr.Ballard passed away at 2:44 pm." I know that these RV forums are not the place to talk about this type of stuff, but the memory of that day still hurts ...and I can't seem to get out of my mind.. For the past 15 years I've only had three people who I can call "Close Friends" and we talk almost every day.. and now I only have two friends.... and we can't seem to talk about Marvin's death... I don't have anyone else close enough that would understand how I feel... So I turn to my friends here on the forums... I never got to say goodbye to my friend Marvin.. and it still hurts every time I think about it.. Again, I'm sorry for talking about death on what is supposed to be a fun filled and happy discussion forum about our RV lifestyle.. but I just needed to "let it out" Thanks for listening... John

Did anyone ever notice that the television stations don't seem to recognize "Mountain Time Zone".. They usually say something like ...the TV show will be shown at .. Or, they will say something like .. will be shown at "7 eastern .. 8 central" There are three hours difference between East Coast and West Coast .. but I've never heard a TV announcer never say "7pm and 10pm" ... I have never seen or heard any TV station mention "Mountain Time" when giving the times for a show to be shown.. what's up with that ... :? it's always Eastern Time, Central Time or Western Time.. And some of the on-line surveys I take part in show Nevada as being in the Mountain Time Zone.... But Nevada is in the "Western Time Zone" .. same time as California.. :h Here is something else to think about..... RE: Living in a RV

MIDNIGHT CALLER, here is one of my old posts...which was published on an online RV help site.. ************************************* I live in my 1995 30 foot Prowler 5th wheel all year 'round and have absolutely no problems with cold weather. Here in northern Nevada, the winters are about average for the middle USA. Temperatures range from 10 below to 30 degrees above at night and range from 20 to 60 degrees in the day. Moisture is fairly high because of the snow we get. I have never had any problem with moisture or frozen pipes. I do use a heat tape on the water line and I have the trailer under-penned with a canvas skirt to keep the cold winds from blowing under the trailer. I use only the trailer's forced air furnace to heat with, except the little space heater in the bathroom when I take my shower.. but I turn it off as soon as I'm out of the shower. Electricity cost to much to try and heat the whole trailer with space heaters. My electric bill runs about $35-45 per month during the hard winter months. (13.5 cent per KW) During the worst part of winter .. December, January and February, I used about 1 gallon of propane per 24 hour day.. during the milder months, my propane usage was less than a gallon per day.. Last winter propane was $2.75 per gal and cost about .(+-). $80/100 per month for everything...Furnace, Water Heater and Baking/Cooking. On many RVs, the furnace heating ducts run along the same path as the water pipes. Plus many RVs have the heating ducts routed into or through the basement storage areas where the holding tanks are located. You should never use a space heater of any type, electric or gas, as the only source of heat in an RV. It may not push enough heat into those places behind the wall where the water pipes are or down into the basement where the tanks are. Remember the RV furnace is properly called a “FORCED AIR FURNACE” I keep the inside temperature at about 67 degrees when I'm up and about, like watching TV or working on the computer. I turn it down to about 60 degrees when going to bed. As for using a heat tape on the water line that feeds the RV,, here is the reply I made to someone else's question about using heat tapes on garden hoses. Maybe it will answer any question you have on that subject.... ******************************************************************* Folks in the RV community know that a "Heat Tape" is a long plastic ribbon that is attached along a garden hose to keep it from freezing during winter time. It works just like an electric blanket does on your bed. It cycles on and off to maintain a temperature of about 40 degrees on your water hose so the water won't freeze during the winter. Contrary to what some people think... a heat tape that is Properly installed cannot and will not "Melt" a garden hose.. simply because a heat tape has a Pre-Set thermostat that keeps it at about 40 degrees F... and I have never seen or heard of a garden hose the will melt at 40 degrees.. Heat Tapes must be used in combination with some type of insulation. Trying to use a heat tape without insulation won't work very well.. Try to get the heat tape model with "clear plastic bubble" on the end that has the plug on it. When the tape is plugged in, a little red light will glow inside the clear plastic bubble and you will know that it's working properly. Last year this type of heat tape were sold at Wal-marts and during my monthly shopping trip to Wal-mart last week, I asked if they were going to have them this year and was told they were on order.. Heat tapes come in different lengths, simply measure the length of your water hose First......... and then buy the length of heat tape recommended on the back of the heat tape package for that length water hose. Heat tapes cost about $15 to $25 depending on length. But they will last for 20 years if taken care of properly. Most hardware stores and places like Wal-Mart carry them as well as the insulation.. In my opinion, the best insulation to use are the "Foam Tubes" (about 99 cent each) with the split down the entire length and are designed to simply slip over the water hose. Most people then wrap some type of tape around the insulated hose about every 6 inches, so the wind won't blow the insulation tubes off. Very Important Notes:.... # 1. Use only plastic "Electrical Tape" to secure the heat tape to the hose and also to secure the foam tubes to the hose.. DO NOT use things like Duct Tape or plastic wire ties.... The reason is that every time a faucet is opened and closed inside the RV, the water hose will expand and contract a little bit ... Electrician's tape will expand and contract with the hose.. but Duct tape and wire ties cannot and could wear a hole in both hose and heat tape over time.. #2. Be sure to lay the heat tape flat against the hose... do not let the heat tape overlap itself or make contact with itself at any point ... and be careful to not "kink" the heat tape or make 90 degree sharp bends around corners.. Either of these things could cause a "Hot Spot" in the heat tape and melt the hose and insulation and could cause a fire.. ******************************************************************** I would not worry too much about getting through the winter folks, just use good old common sense and you will be alright.. My 5th wheel is as warm as any "house" I have ever had and a heck of a lot cheaper living.. and again... Please remember that I am NOT an expert on these things... and have never said that the way I do things is the only way or the correct way... it's just my way.. Some of the stuff I have learned over the years, I've learned right here on the RV forums from other people like you.. and other things I learned the hard way... just like you did.. :) :) If you have any specific questions about what I did or how I did it,, drop me an email or contact me on the RV forums. I'll be glad to help in any way I can.. after all, that's what neighbors do... :) Best of luck, John

RE: Living in a RV

After many years of traveling around the USA, I was forced to give up my gypsy lifestyle and settle down due to being diagnosed with Glaucoma and the eventual loss of one eye... but I refused to give up my RV.. After trying to live in a motor home with no slide-out for just one year, I sold it and bought a 30.5 ft 5th wheel with one 16 foot slide-out... I lived in the 5th wheel for over ten years with it parked in an RV park in Carson City.. I have several posts here on this Woodall's Forum as well as on other RV forums like Escapees. In those posts I have discussed what it was like to live full time in an RV .. I discussed some of the problems as well as some of the good things about living in an RV trailer full time.. I loved living in my 5th wheel.... it had everything a house would have except "Dancing Room"... and..... it was a heck of a lot cheaper than living in a house... 99% of all problems that people have are because they did not use common sense nor did they listen to those RVer's who had experienced the problems... For my personal opinion.... GO FOR IT.. !!!! and if you have any specific questions about how I did certain things... just give me a yell and I'll be glad to help. I loved my 5th wheel and miss it... but this past January a fellow RVer and good friend died and I inherited his house... It's kind of hard to turn down a home when it is given to you free and clear... I still have my 5th wheel stored in a local storage yard... dreaming of one day taking to the road once again... I know it's just a dream because my eyesight is not getting any better... but sometimes a dream is better than reality... :) :B John

RE: Daylight savings time yea or nay

Like DUTCH said..... blame the Daylight Saving Time System on Ben Franklin.. Ol' Ben presented it to the Continental Congress and the idea was rejected... Ben Franklin's purpose in presenting the idea to congress was to "Save Energy".. Yep... Ben Franklin was the first American to consider an Energy Saving program. The type of energy he wanted to save ..????? CANDLES... yes, he wanted to reduce the use of candles... Candles were hand made in those days and it took a lot of work to make them... so by allowing the people to work longer hours during the daylight hours , they would have less idle time at home where they used candles to light their homes.. Daylight time was once again brought up to the US Congress in the early 1900's ... but it was not until many years later that the US finally adopted Daylight Saving Time..... Check out the whole story here.... http://www.snopes.com/science/daylight.asp John

RE: Liz needs a car

$25,000.00 for any USED car is definitely NOT cheap... Heck, for that matter, $25,000.00 for a "New" car is expensive in today's economy and scary job market... and I don't care what kind of car it is... Mercedes, Cadillac, Rolls Royce or a Festiva or Chevy..... A "cheap" used car for most hard working Americans is less that $10,000.00.....

RE: What time will it be ?

I always get a chuckle when I see or hear folks talk about "Military Time".. The 24 hour time keeping system is "World Time" ... not Military Time... it just happens that the US Military uses "World Time" for technical/official situations.. and the main reason the US Military uses it is because MOST of the rest of the world uses the 24 hour clock and it is easier to communicate when using a common language... The United States is one of only a couple of countries in the world that uses the "AM/PM" system of time keeping.. In most countries in the world you will find everyone, both their civilians and their military, speak and write using the 24 hour time system.. As for me personally, for the past 50+ years I use only the 24 hour system.... everything from writing letters/emails .... speaking ... and all of my watches and clocks...etc... are based on the 24 hour system. the 24 hour clock is easier and quicker to write or speak than using "AM/PM" GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)is the base of the entire world's time keeping regardless of whether they use the 24 hour clock or the AM/PM system.. East Coast USA is GMT-6 Central USA is GMT-7 West Coast USA is GMT-8 Note ... for Daylight Saving Time adjust one hour But as always... to each their own ...

RE: Liz needs a car

Last summer I traded my little truck for a "Car"... it's the first "Car" I have owned in over forty years...I've always had trucks.. But with retirement, my money situation would no longer allow me to go for another truck with higher monthly payments... so I shopped for the best deal on a car.. I settled for a 2007 "KIA Spectra" .. 4 cylinder, automatic, with 42000 miles on it and it's loaded with everything but the kitchen sink :B.. So far I really like it... it averages about 28/30 mpg and handles great... with quick response and fast off the line when I floor it... I am amazed at the room inside... at 6 ft and 200+ pounds, I am very comfortable when driving ... with lots of head room I can even wear my Stetson when driving, like I did in my trucks... and the back seat is so large and roomy that my friends can stretch out their legs and relax.... even when the front seats are slid back all the way to accommodate tall people sitting in the front seats. BUT.... the one thing that convinced me to get the Kia instead of any other car... was the number of Air Bags in it.. The 2007 Kia Spectra has 10 .. that's TEN air bags in it...so if in an accident ..(God Forbid).. the driver and all passengers are completely surrounded by air bags. With my old 1993 truck as a trade, I got the 2007 Kia for only $7000.00 and monthly payments of $150.00 Back in my younger days I would have laughed at the idea of a real man owning a car... but now in my late sixties and retired,.. this little Kia is perfect for me... But as always... to each their own.. :B :B John

RE: Prompt to enter a 25 alfa-numberic digit product key??

Ahhh.. now I understand Muddy... at least I think I do... :@ you are saying that the reason I did not have to install any of the Operating Systems on the computers that I've had over the years ... here is a list of the computers I've had... ** Sears & Roebuck HP brand desktop with Win-3.1 ** Acer brand desktop with Win-95 ** Best Buy brand desktop with Win-XP ** Dell brand desktop with Win-XP ** Walmart E-Machine desktop with Win-XP ** HP brand laptop with Win-XP ** Toshiba brand laptop with Win-XP ... is because I bought each one of those computers "off the shelf" in a Factory Sealed box" from a large "Chain-Store" business.. Where as if I had bought my computers from a "Computer Store" where they were assembled on site, I would have had to install the OS myself with the activation code supplied on the bottom of the computer.. ??? hummmnnnn..well, I'll be darned... I was not aware of that because I have always just grabbed the box off the shelf, checked to make sure it was factory sealed and put it in my shopping cart... ... then when I got home, I simply unpacked it and connected everything together and went on line and everything just Worked..(for lack of a better word).. like it was supposed to. Thanks for the information Muddy ... I learned something new... and the main thing I learned is always buy a factory sealed box and never buy a computer from a "computer store".. Thanks again, John edited for spelling

RE: Prompt to enter a 25 alfa-numberic digit product key??

Almost all PC's have to have the operating system key put in on first boot. Been like that for years. Hi Muddy ... You have me a little confused... are you talking about the operating system like "Win-XP" or "Win-7" or something else ? The reason I ask is because I've never had to enter any numbers or register or do anything else for the windows operating systems to work... Since the mid 1980's, all of my PC computers, desktops and laptops, came right out of the box ready to operate...(win 3.1, win 95, win XP, win 7..etc) Of course I've never had a MAC computer, so maybe they need to be set up before using.. ?? .. but none of my PCs needed setting up... Just plug it in and turn it on... and they were ready to go... no set up of any type... Of course I had to install and set-up the special programs that I use... like Juno, Yahoo, Google, Photo-shop, AVG... etc... but never the operating systems.. ....or am I not understanding what you are saying... and that's highly possible with me.. :B :B I cannot express my personal opinion of Best Buy here on the forums as the moderators don't allow cussing, ranting and raving about the way Best Buy does business.... let's just say that I normally refer to them as "Worst Buy".. I agree with the engineer... you can't catch a large mouth bass with a princess on your hook ... but now a frog is a different story... just slip the hook in one leg of the frog and cast him into the lily pads.. and WHAMMM !!! you'll catch a humongous bass.... Of course if it's a talking frog... you need to put duct tape over his mouth so his talking won't scare away the fish.. :W :B :B hehehehehe.... John

RE: Are you from Louisiana

....I have never heard of a "PU CON" so I looked the word up in Websters Dictionary ... Pu-con is the name of a "Cardboard" and is typically used as "Poster Board" for signs and art drawings. But then I read the last two posts and from that discussion, it seems that you folks are talking about Pecans... and are pronouncing the word "PECAN" as Pucon... Different parts of the country have different pronunciations of words.. But the thing that really bugs me is those dang yankees who say "Pecahn" instead of Pee-can.. Confound Yankees... there ain't no letter "H" in the word... it is pronounced "PEE-CAN"... an I ought to know cause my Mammy kept a Pee-Can under her bed her whole life... :B :B the devil made me do it... :W :W oh ... by the way, if you want a real treat to go with your beer, soda, etc... Place shelled pecan halves in a well buttered baking pan and sprinkle with salt.. then roast in a 350* oven for about ten minutes or until the pecans just start turning a deep brown.... remove from oven and stir so that the butter and salt completely coat the pecans.. Let them cool off and enjoy... John

RE: air-card on or off when not using?

When I was chasing wild land fires across the western USA for a living, I had an air card for my laptop... When through with my online activities, I always removed the air card from the laptop and stowed it safely away in it's little metal carrying case.. to protect it from damage.. With all the hustle and bustle of a fire camp and trying to live out of a duffel bag... it was to easy for the air card to be broken or stolen.. So... based on my personal experience only... I suggest removing the air card and stowing it away immediately after you are finished with your online activities, so it does not get knocked, dropped or broken.. But as always ... to each his own... John

I think some states use "uins" for the plural of "y'all". Wayne hahahahaaaa... I gotta laugh at that Wayne... cause the only time I have ever heard that expression was when I was in the Navy and the Senior Petty Officer that held roll call each morning used it... He was from New Jersey and his accent was extremely pronounced... he would say things like ... "Yoose tree guys is gonna go to dat school today".... and ... "I need tree peoples for uh detail and UINS will report to dah mess hall".... hahahahaaa... no, I'm not making this up... he really did talk just like that... we kids were trying hard not to let him see us laughing at him.. or we would likely have spent some time in the scullery..
