RE: Fridge too cold

I have one of these in my RV fridge: http://www.rvtruckparts.com/Image/31057.jpg I don't know if it will solve your problem or not, but it will run for about a month on 2 D cells.

RE: Manufactures that install quality tires, offer upgrades.

My 2010 Cougar came standard with China Bombs. PowerKing or something like that. I intend to watch them closely, and replace them after the first year or so.

RE: Charging my TT batteries...Dodge Ram 3500

I have had two Dodge pickups 04 & 06 and have never had to install a fuse to make the charging leg hot. I believe this is a GM thing... Bryan What he said^^^

RE: Weight recommendation for 3/4-ton?

The average 30-34' long (actual length) has a pin weight of around 3,000#. Nonsense. My 36'6" 5er has an advertised pin weight of just over 1600#. I figure it'll be just over 2000# when loaded.

RE: Bought a new generator :)

Thanks Prof. I would never use the 12V output to charge a battery when I have a perfectly good charger/converter in the RV. My Elim3000 still runs like a top after 5 years. It will use some oil when loaded running the A/C in hot weather though. Whats weird about the ELM3000 and clones is that I tried to tell a guy on here the other day that his Champion was basically a clone of my old Elim, and he denied it :B. Heck, I even posted pictures of each. Except for the control panel and the paint color, they are twins to me. Do you know much about the Magna I bought?

RE: Honda EX1000 Noise

If you're not stuck on getting a Honda, you should look at other brands like Kipor, Magna and Boliy. They all make inverter generators that will be about 50% cheaper than a similar wattage Honda. They are not built as well though.

RE: Weight recommendation for 3/4-ton?

If you're looking at buying a F250/350 for towing, I hope you plan to skip the 5.4L, and get the V10 or the new 6.2L V8. There is a reason GM doesn't even offer it's little 5.3L in a 2500 series.

RE: Fifth Wheel or Travel Trailer

I am just in the process of switching from a TT to a 5er. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Posting here (in the fifth wheels forum) you will likely be told fifth wheels are better. Travel Trailer (TT) advantages: - inexpensive hitch set up - no drilling or install required - full use of truck bed - no risk of contacting cab when turning tight - more areodynamic (not as high generally) - many light weight options - for ease of matching tow vehicle to RV - generally less expensive per foot of RV purchased Disadvantages: - plain floorplans - generally less outdoor storage (no "basement") Fifth Wheel (5er) advantages: - generally nicer floorplans (IMO) - better towing dynamics - usually more "outdoor" storage Disadvantages: - requires a more heavy duty truck - requires hitch to be "installed" - RV can contact cab of truck if you're not careful, depending on truck - usually higher total height than a TT, catch more wind, and can catch on low obsticles

RE: 30 or 50 amp?

For a 1987 RV of that size, I'd be shocked if it was anything but 30A.

RE: Newbie w/ GMC Sierra 1500

There are plenty of RVs that you could tow with your current truck. Just depends what you want. If you're looking at fullsized conventional RVs, you will likely want to upgrade the truck.

RE: Do you change rear end gear oil

WHILE ON THIS SUBJECT. Dang caps. What is the real reason for any one that does' not go off road, to have a 4 wheel drive? Years ago a Ford dealer asked me how many times did I plan on using the front drive a year. I told him may be once or twice. He told me to save the money on gas and extra equipment and get a decent two wheel and it would "providing " the power train was there, would pull any thing I wanted. It is my belief that there are a lot of extra parts getting worn out "just " for looks? MY 2 cents. Never had and probably never will need a 4x4. Cheers Chuck Hey Chuck, come to Canada in January with your 2wd. After the first blizzard, you'll maybe make it to the end of your block before getting stuck and ending up clogging the street. Maybe good in Oregon, but useless for 4 months of the year where I live.

RE: Do you change rear end gear oil

I change my gear oil every couple of years. I use synthetic oil of whatever viscosity is recommended (current truck calls for 75w90). Easy to do, and good PM.

RE: Towing with Tacoma - Bad Idea?

Sounds like a pretty big load for a V6. I don't think you'll be happy with the performance. You have a 8,000lb truck pulling an 11,000lb trailer with a 350hp motor? 54lbs per horsepower? A Tacoma is a 5,000lb truck pulling a proposed 5,000lb trailer with a 236hp motor? 42lbs per horsepower or 22% more power per pound when merging onto the highway? Yes, aerodynamics come into play but we have no idea what trailer the OP is considering. Yes, yours is a turbo diesel so it has 3x the torque, will run at a lower rpm, get better mileage, and is not as impacted by altitude. But... the OPs proposed combo weighs less than your trailer alone. In the end I think the V6's performance will be close to yours if the OP is towing on the east coast and is willing to run at a higher RPM. In 4th 2500 rpm is 60mph and 2900rpm is 70mph. It will downshift to 3rd on the longer steeper grades on the east coast but due to our terrain that's only a couple minutes every hour over 3000rpm. Yes, I pull an Rv with a 3500 Turbo diesel NOW, but I did tow a 25' ultralight TT (3600# dry, 4900# GVWR) with a ~ 200hp/250tq V6 before -- two RVs and a few years ago, so I've been there, done that. I'm not talking down from high atop Mount Cummins to some lowly V6 tow-er. Other folks may be more patient, or have much different (lower) expectations performance wise, and for them, it might be bearable. I didn't care for the 'V6 & under 5000# TT' combo at all, it didn't do very well in my mind. It boiled over in the heat (in Canada), swayed all over, and sucked big time in the hills. Oh yeah, and I forgot the sub 7 mpg fuel economy it got while doing the towing. YMMV.

The in tank design is a much better one. You shouldn't have any more problems.
